A young black transgender woman was shot dead in a Louisiana motel this week, becoming at least the seventh transgender woman known to have been killed in the United States this year, rights advocates said.
The woman, Amia Tyrae, 28, was killed Monday at about 1:15 a.m. at a motel on Airline Highway, according to the Baton Rouge Police Department.
Dr. William Clark, the East Baton Rouge Parish coroner, ruled Ms. Tyrae’s death a homicide, caused by a gunshot wound to the chest.
The Police Department said Friday night that Dedrick Butler, 22, of Denham Springs, La., had been arrested in the killing. He was charged with second-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number.

The killer was a multiple felon, so not some pillar of the community type to begin with.
And this felon kills a "transgender" man/woman.
Cheez whiz, all kinds of people get killed in motel rooms, and over all kinds of disputes.
Sometimes for no reason at all, just that the killer felt like murdering someone.
Where is it written in stone that only *certain* people's murders are particularly noteworthy?
I’d love to be part of a group that only saw 7 murders in a quarter.
That's what I'm wondering....a true hate crime or other motivation. But then again, I think if you murder someone for whatever reason, it's based on hate.
A transgender woman ... I’m still mixed up. If it is really a man posing as a woman, why don’t they say a transgender man? Or is it the other way around?
A transgender woman is a biological man, and a transgender man is a biological woman. For example, Caitlyn Jenner would be referred to as a transgender woman.
Of course when a whole political movement becomes something like a collection of crazy....
