Were having a moment for male tears no, not the kind that the popular feminist mug metaphorically collects in pursuit of bringing down the patriarchy. Were talking literal tears that men shed in moments of televised vulnerability.
Take the Netflix reboot of Queer Eye, just renewed for a second season. Yes, its a makeover show with bubbly experts instructing schleppy men on the wonders of slim-cut jeans, five-minute grooming routines, Ikea and avocados. But its also a show about men who are stuck and held in place by fear, insecurity, past trauma or rigid norms of what it means to be a man.
Just like the old series, a group of openly gay men deemed experts in areas such as food and culture enter a strangers life and try to improve it. The original show was fighting for tolerance, says one member of the new Fab Five at the top of the 2018 series. Were fighting for acceptance.
In the process, Netflixs Queer Eye subtly dings toxic masculinity. Giving these strangers haircuts and time to spend a few minutes taking care of themselves also gives them a chance or, a push to open up a bit about whats bubbling below the surface. Sometimes these guys cry, surprising even themselves.

My favorite show “Chopped” has men (women and children) sobbing all the time. It’s like “Queen for a Day” for chefs.
“Queer Eye” is not a known bastion of masculinity.....
Men are crying on TV? and they use Queer Eye as an example of men?
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

There is no crying......https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6M8szlSa-8o
One of the best movie scenes!
And “This is Us.”
I don’t have a problem with men crying. Men cry all the time, tough men who have been through a lot. And what some men have been through in times of war, they have that right and latitude to do so.
But this isn’t that. This is bloody contrived to make men more “feminine”.
I have no problem with seeing a grown man have tears if it is clearly an emotional issue of import. I am an emotional person myself, but I try to control myself, not just let it all out. WTF.
What I can’t stand is men who blubber at every damned thing...like John Boehner.
No they aren’t
If a man is gonna cry in mass media, it better be because his wife or child died, or something equally world-shaking.
The only time a man is allowed to cry is when watching the end of “Old Yeller”.
You got it right on the money there.
I never understood the whole idea behind d this show, that somehow homosexual men were going to improve the quality of men’s lives.
I also don’t understand how it could be called “Queer” because isn’t queer an insulting word when used to describe a homosexual???
Or is it something like how black people are allowed to use the dreaded “N” word but the rest of us aren’t???
Asks who did you sell your nuts to?.
If they kidnapped and tortured the men’s children to force them to be on that show might be a reason to cry.
