Marriage Proposals Are Stupid
The Atlantic ^ | March 23, 2018 | Carolione Kitchner

Posted on 03/27/2018 6:18:53 AM PDT by C19fan

The marriage proposal is one of the most ritualized moments in modern American life. Growing up, many girls are instilled with a specific idea of how it should go: He’ll take us somewhere romantic—we’ll have no idea what’s happening—he’ll get down on one knee—we’ll start crying—he’ll pop the question—we’ll immediately say yes. It should be magical.

But for a lot of heterosexual couples, the proposal—as movies portray it, as many millennial women have internalized it—doesn’t reflect the kind of modern, egalitarian relationships many women want today. Whom to marry is among the most important decisions most people will ever make in their lives, and yet it’s not a choice made in the course of a conversation—the normal way two grown humans make big life decisions. Instead, it has to be a show, with a prefixed grand finale: “yes.”

Feminism ruining everything. Her core argument is she assumes a couple never talks about the future before a marriage proposal. Given how ridiculous that is her argument falls to pieces. Some of the great moments in literature are proposals that have gone well of horribly: Darcy & Lizzie from "Pride & Prejudice", the 2nd proposal of Levin to Kitty from "Anna Karenina", and Thornton's proposal to Margaret Hale from Gaskell's "North and South".

I do find the over the top proposals driven by social media tasteless.

I wanted the romance even if I had to invent it !

Had a friend who proposed after lengthy discussions over the proposal. It was all choreographed. Both knew exactly what would happen, when, how, etc. It was all done for show to impress those around. BTW, six months later, the engagement was off. Always wondered if the choreographed the breakup?

She’s daft. The biggest problem is leftists don’t get out enough. Their tiny little bubble is not the whole world, and they are unable to grasp the fact.

Feminism ruining everything.

A lot of these women will end up lonely, sad, and bitter. They will have no family when their sitting alone dying in a nursing home. No husband. No children. No grandchildren. No one to visit. No one to care.

My wife and I love to visit the place I proposed and reflect on our years of marriage together. It will always be special in our hearts. We even love to share the place and moment with our children.

We both knew we wanted marriage together. The proposal was to establish an enduring memory.

"...over the top proposals..."

They are seemingly done for “likes” and not so much for the actual couple. Some need a camera crew and producer!

Just on a side note, I proposed to my wife on a cold night in mid December while standing along some railroad tracks in Buffalo Minnesota.

She still said Yes.

If we could see a photo of the author of this sad-sack piece, perhaps we could understand why she wrote it.

Don’t forget the hilarious proposal(s) of Mr. Guppy to Esther in Dickens’ Bleak House.

Then there is the non-proposal in Pickwick Papers with the widow Mrs. Bardell that leads the principled Mr. Pickwick to jail.

Have of English literature would be ruined without proposals.

My husband asked me in private after Christmas Eve mass. No big show, just an honest declaration of love and a beautiful ring. He”s still my one and only 25 years later. She’s just upset she had to propose to him!

We can agree on that! A marriage proposal is one of the most romantic things to happen to a woman. And sometimes to a man! (Check out the hilarious scene in Funny Girl.)
