Qantas flights direct from London to Perth – we reveal the hell of flying non-stop for 17 hours [tr]

I KNOW I shouldn’t think about it, I’ll scare myself to death but after seventeen hours in the air, I can’t get the worst case scenario out of my head.

No, not a plane crash. I am convinced that I am breathing more farts than air.

I’m on Qantas’ inaugural Perth to London flight, the longest to and from the UK, and the atmosphere in the pressurised tube I’ve been sharing with over 200 other bodies has gotten quite stale.

I was an Army Brat in those years.
We sailed from Seattle to Yokohama and back on MSTS ships.
Troops on the bow and fantail. Military dependents in tiny staterooms on five decks in the midsection.

I flew several 17 hour flights; from BWI to Manas. Now that was painful.

Longest I have ever flown is Dulles - to - Tokyo - Narita. Thirteen hours. ugh....

It amazes me how we pay a fee to be subject to near torture. I have told my spouse no more S Africa trips. No more commercial flights in my remaining time on this planet.

I don't fly often for vacations but when I do I have come to the conclusion that it is worth spending the extra to fly first class or business class. Nothing knocks the vacation feeling right out of me than a couple hours in coach.

As long as the toilets work, it beats sail ships and wagon trains. Stop whining.

I have flown from Atlanta or Chicago or Houston to Tokyo or Seoul or Hong Kong on my way to Việt Nam many times. That leg can last 13 hours up to 16 hours. I fly Economy. On Asian or Delta airlines it can be relatively pleasant outside of the need to stand up for periods of time. On United it is quite miserable. An unbelievable number of people seem to prefer miserable because United carries more passengers than any other airline.

We fly to Taiwan and it’s a 14 hrs across the pond. 26hrs total travel time with layovers and plane changes. It sucks.

Many years ago, used to regularly fly from JFK to BA...first class, of course...12-13 hours air time. Upon takeoff, several free belts of favorite beverage..night, night😴 no problem.

I once took a 19-hour flight from Wrightstown, NJ to Frankfurt, Germany aboard a DC-6, but we stopped to refuel in Gander, Newfoundland.

Big deal. I’ve flown longer direct flights. Sitting in Qantas economy is not the end of the world—the article makes it sound like the passengers were waterboarded.

Six trips back and forth, 1951-1961.
The last trip to the US arrived in Oakland.
The ship was the General W. A. Mann, TAP 112.

Dulles to Tokyo is 6753 miles.

BWI to Manas is 6482.

How the heck did my flight last longer? I am sure both flights did the oval toward the pole.

Longest for me was 17 hours Hong kong to SFO on JAL’s inaugural flight. The bird went north past Japan to catch the jet stream and we rocketed home. Amazing flight, almost empty, took the center section forward, removed the armrests, got blankets and pillows and slept most of the way.

Seventeen hours...that’s nice. Once spent 67 days in a metal tube with 130 others.

Aren’t there rules limiting consecutive hours on duty by pilots? How do they get around this for these long flights?

LOL, with all those fart smells, waterboarding was probably preferable!
