Qantas flights direct from London to Perth – we reveal the hell of flying non-stop for 17 hours [tr]

I KNOW I shouldn’t think about it, I’ll scare myself to death but after seventeen hours in the air, I can’t get the worst case scenario out of my head.

No, not a plane crash. I am convinced that I am breathing more farts than air.

I’m on Qantas’ inaugural Perth to London flight, the longest to and from the UK, and the atmosphere in the pressurised tube I’ve been sharing with over 200 other bodies has gotten quite stale.

Thanks! I really like that painting. I’m looking at some of his others and am impressed with how he paints the sea, the water itself, as much as the boats. He has such a feel for the way water looks.

Some of his paintings make you wish you were a farmer in Kansas!

I flew United twice to Việt Nam. Both times I lost my checked bags. The second time my wife back in Florida got on the phone and started calling. After many many shunts to different and many repeated digital phone answerings and a few unhelpful live clerks a warehosue guy in Chicago picked up the phone. She repeated her requests for information. The fellow said that yes, he had seen the bag (my bags are always distinctive and easily spotted) and he was sure United would get them back to us in a week or ten days. Instead, we got a letter from UAL stating that their legal department had determined that UAL had no liability and therefore the "items would not be returned" and there would be no compensation. The arrogance of that is breathtaking.
The flight was miserable. The snacks consisted of three or four peanuts twice and when I asked for some water was told I had received my water not an hour before. The stewardesses tended to be fat and one of them totally blocked the aisle. There was no getting past her if you needed to go to the head. All had an attitude that seemed to say that they thought of the passengers as the burden they had to bear to wear spiffy uniforms and go to exotic places.
It didn't help my own perceptions that I had previously flown on KAL and on Hàng Không Việt Nam where the attitude of the staff is that they really want you to fly on their airplanes again. Delta was not great but bearable until they partnered with ANA and adopted the approaches and attitudes of ANA. Now Delta is a pleasure to fly, at least over the Pacific, like the Asian planes.

My brother worked for thirty years as a dispatcher then computer technician for the Pinellas County Sheriffs office. his wife ran off with a Lutheran preacher years ago and his house is paid off. He has a very nice retirement check and a good sized SS check. He has been driving all over the country and Canada going to country and bluegrass and folk art festivals and seeing all the things he used to look at in National Geographic. He has now a cabin in western North Carolina and returns to his “home” in Tampa for a couple of weeks every year. There is a woman he travels with for four months of the year and she gets him to places he never thought of. He is disgustingly healthy and will do this for years to come. He would never get on an airplane.

I have spent as much as 37 hours in transit with lo-o-o-ong layovers but that’s because my main consideration is price, except that I will fly for a couple of hundred dollars more if that is what it takes to stay off United.

I am the only one who has been sat in economy for the nine thousand and one mile journey.

We would say, "has been seated."

It is a great country we have. I like seeing it from the ground level! I envy your brother except for the wife-running-off thing.
