They're specifically and especially favored by the critics because they're missing John Wayne.
Dutch Ingstrom: "Silver rings your butt, thems WASHERS!"
Tector Gorch: "Washers. ...Washers. You mean we shot our way out of that town for a dollar's worth of STEEL HOLES?"
ANGEL: You must tell me. Where is Mapache?
Don Jose: Do you want to know for your father? or the whore?
Pike: Either you learn to live with it or we leave you here.
Angel: I go with you hefe.
Pike: Let's go.
Lyle Gorch: Why not.
Palance is perfect, and the rest are not very good. There is nothing original about the plot.
Palance is perfect, but can’t carry the film by himself, and Alan Ladd is no cowboy.
Bonus features of this film include possibly the only great acting performance ever turned out by Rat Pack crooner Dean Martin, and a haunting theme written by Morricone.
Dimitri Tiompkin wrote the score to Rio Bravo, not Morricone.
Sorry for lateness.
No, I think not. I will start a list. Cooper is, I admit, not my most favorite, but he is still Cooper. Fan of Brennan ever since The Sons of Will Sonnett.
Love western authenticity.
That’s right, Pilgrim.
My mistake. Still like it though: not generic.
Wagon Train [First 4 seasons: Ward Bond]
The Rifleman
Maverick [First 3 seasons: James Garner]
Rawhide
Cheyenne
Wanted: Dead or Alive
Have Gun, Will Travel
Your opinion is that of a tiny minority. The WWA includes those who write screenplays for Western films; they know their trade. The script, cast, direction, cinematography, and editing are first rate. In addition to the #1 WWA rating, the AFI selected Shane as the #3 Western film of all time.
Exactly what I though. “¿Quien es ese maldito idiota?”
Searchers? The Darkest Wayne, indeed!
I believe his only Oscar winner, True Grit he was just having fun doing his impression of Wallace Beery.
Also I love The Shootist
bkmk
I think you are correct, he looked like he enjoyed playing that role...it suited him, I never picked up on the Walter Beery aspect! Hahahahahaha...no kidding, I just watched a clip of “Treasure Island” and Wayne was spot on!
I love the old “True Grit”, and I thought the new one did a nice job of paying tribute to it and keeping the faith.
But to me, Rooster Cogburn will always be John Wayne!
I remember seeing it at the Officer’s Club in Yokosuka, Japan. My parents would take us out to eat there, and on certain nights, they would show a movie, and diners would have coffee and dessert...
I remember seeing “The Green Berets”, “Hellfighters”, and “True Grit” there!
Loved it.
couple of his books that are not westerns that are great are The Last of The Breed and the Haunted Mesa.”
I have both books.
Beef. It’s what’s for dinner.
Haunted Mesa...
Started it...
I’ve seen it a dozen times. It is astounding to me that some here don’t like it.
Beautiful! Love the wide open spaces. Also, the last picture of John Wayne is like I’ve never seen him before. Really shows the range of his acting ability.
The “Injuns” quote is a wake-up call for how soft we’ve become since the cowboy days. Nowadays we’re the more like the feckless Injuns than like our pioneer ancestors.
