One place where the <pre> and </pre> trick comes in handy, is preserving spaces in a line. HTML compresses multiple spaces into a single space.

Below is a left square brace, 10 spaces, and a right square brace, first in <blockquote>, then in <pre>

For just a few spaces, I use

& nbsp;& nbsp;& nbsp;

with the spaces removed after the ampersand.
