The Duke of Cambridge bestowed the honour on the Liverpool-born star at a ceremony at Buckingham Palace.
"It means a lot actually," the musician told the BBC. "It means recognition for the things we've done. I was really pleased to accept this."
The honour comes 53 years after the Beatles were all awarded the MBE - and Starr said he had missed his bandmates' companionship this time round.
"I was a bit shaky today on my own," he said.

Asked whether he wanted to be known as Sir Ringo, the musician, whose real name is Richard Starkey, replied: "I don't know yet. It's new and I don't know how you use it properly."
Turning to BBC reporter Colin Paterson, he added: "But I expect you to use it."
The 77-year-old added he knew exactly what he'd do with his medal.
"I'll be wearing it at breakfast," he joked.
His honour comes 21 years after fellow Beatle Paul McCartney was knighted.
Starr said the pair had met for dinner last week in Los Angeles, and Sir Paul had offered him some advice for the ceremony: "Keep smiling."
Other people receiving honours at Tuesday's ceremony included authors Jilly Cooper and Michael Morpurgo, former Scottish rugby player John "Ian" McLauchlan, Welsh rugby player Sam Warburton and foster carer Anne Shaw.

I always wondered how drummers know what key to play in.

Each had a great "solo" career that suggests to me that the Beatles would have probably continued as the top act in the world. Consider that you had four artists putting together albums. Had they still been the Beatles, they could have skimmed the cream off the top. Plus, the four combined seemed to have a synergy that is lacking in the individual works. Each of the songs would have been better as a Beatle song than it was as an individual song. A lot of that synergy is the George Martin effect IMO.

Ringo deserves this as any Beatles would deserve it. There is a quality about Ringo that makes him the most homespun of the lot. He sinks into normalcy, rises up for some amazing drum playing and then sinks back again into yak and twitter of his homespun roots. He’s the kind of guy that would take his mom to bingo games if she wanted, and hang around to keep her company. He would be there for the close dear ones, and though being in the BEATLES did corrupt him in part (how could it not?), he can throw it off and sink back into his homey origins.
Now I say this without ever meeting Ringo or reading any books on him or even following him on social media. My knowledge is limited. Maybe I’m projecting qualities on him... I don’t know. But he is the oldest of the Beatles and it looks like God continues to favor him. He still has his youthful looks and humor and seems very fortunate...

You opine that John was the predominant writer of Beatles lyrics; but, if his ability was of such caliber, then why is it that most of what he wrote, post Beatles, was nowhere near the quality you give him while with the band?
OTOH, Paul’s lyrics were quite good post Beatles, both with Wings and as a solo artist.

I knew about Paul’s “control” issue - and, from what I’ve read, he was not much liked by the others because of his constant berating of their abilities. I also read that their were many occasions where Ringo’s drumming was so poor (in Paul’s opinion) that Paul would go back in studio and dub over the drum track; but I don’t know for certain if that aspect is true.
She may have been quite the “artist” to her clique of elites, but, by a comparative measure with other vocalists of the period - and even by today’s rather low standards -
Yoko’s singing was and is the most god-awful trash ever recorded.
IMHO, Double Fantasy is the best post Beatles album. Beautiful Boy, Watching The Wheels, Woman...wonderful stuff.
There was an interview once where John was asked if Ringo was the best drummer he had seen. John said, “He is not even the best drummer in the Beatles.”
Paul was/is an exceptionally talented man. His writing will hang in there for the next hundred years. But that said, he is probably kind of a perfectionist.
And yet when working with a talented drummer on one of his projects, John told the drummer to do it like Ringo.
“Probably” kind of a perfectionist ... LOL, Ya think?
Gene Kelly was also an obnoxious perfectionist...but look at the work he produced because of it. Same with Paul.
