I remember The Ventures songs fresh on the radio. My favorite is Telstar and The Lonely Bull. Still love those songs. My older brother started playing guitar because of The Ventures, and still does. Pipeline is another great tune.

Because he did almost exclusively instrumentals many people don’t view him the way they might a Clapton et al but Edwads was possibly more influential....so many players learned to play along to Ventures records since the entire song was, in a manner of speaking, a guitar solo with no vocals to sit through. Not to mention he was a virtuoso.

Prayers up for Nokie. I wasn’t a big fan of the Ventures, but the first song I learned on guitar was “ Walk Don’t Run.” I’m sure many others learned it first too. But then I dove head-first into deep Delta Blues.

I graduated high school in 1965. So many great rock and roll songs while I was growing up.

Some pretty big movies too in 65. “The Sound Of Music”, “Dr. Zhivago”. The British invasion was going strong then too.

They all got it from Link Wray. He was the first.

One of my all time favorite songs is “Silence Is Golden” by “The Tremeloes”. I was sure the “Searchers” also did it but have checked a couple of times and can’t find it.

Telstar
The Lonely Bull
Calcutta
Apache
Never on Sunday
Tequila
Green Onions
Percolator
Out of Limits
Let There Be Drums
The Bat
The Fourth Dimension
The Twilight Zone

I think the Ventures sound in junior high school in 1963 and 1964 somehow convinced my brain I had to live in California. Hearing that sound made it obvious that freezing in upstate New York wasn’t what I wanted to do. Moving to California became reality only eight years after loving their sound in junior high.

I own a Glenfield 30-30 that used to belong to Howie Johnson. It’s not a drum but who cares

He was a regular at the Chet Atkins Appreciation Society meetings in Nashville and was a gregarious and helpful gentleman. The Ventures endorsed the Mosrite guitar for years which is one heavy guitar. RIP Nokie.
