I knew a finance professor. He may have been a good professor, but he was fresh out. Socially clueless. Anyway, we eventually met his wife. A Filipino woman, we all assumed a mail order bride. But she definitely told him what to do and when. But I think it was good for him. Outside of academia, he was out to sea. And I never heard him complain. But she wasn’t “docile” to him.

Seriously, though, I wonder how this guy has been living (and affording cigarettes). Theft? Casual labor? Does the riverbank have a thriving community of European homeless gents?

I think if he was clean, tidily-dressed, and shaved, he’d look like a reasonable 50, for a smoker. He seems to have teeth, at least.
