In The Sum of All Fears, a nuclear bomb is detonated at a football game in Baltimore. That would get people’s attention.

In The Sum of All Fears, a nuclear bomb is detonated at a football game in Baltimore. That would get peoples attention. In the Clancy book, the bomb goes off in a van outside a football game in Colorado and it's a fizzle because of a mistake made by the builders of the bomb who killed the architect of the bomb before he completed the last step. . . This resulted in just spreading radioactive material over the eastward (IIRC) area away from the stadium and not killing as many people as intended.
