'Castaways' in motor homes feel stranded on society's fringe
LA times ^ | 3/3/2018 | Luis Sinco

The 2017 Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count tallied 4,545 campers and RVs in L.A. County that possibly serve as makeshift dwellings. In short, one of America's least affordable housing market forces people to find creative alternatives for shelter.

I happened upon the situation about a year ago, trying to find a shortcut on my commute home. I exited the jammed 110 Freeway in South L.A., turning onto Broadway to a landscape dominated by warehouses and light industry. At 133rd Street, I noticed numerous motor homes, most in a state of disrepair, lining both sides of the road.

I found similar encampments in Manchester Square, a once-thriving neighborhood just east of LAX being converted into a transportation hub for the airport. In a surreal scene, scores of homeless people scratched out an existence beneath the endless string of jetliners landing at the airport.

“ As far as LA goes the prices will be collapsing soon...”

I disagree. Lots of money from China continues to flow into LA and So. Cal. That money is currently financing new high construction in Downtown LA and is responsible for driving up home prices from LA to San Diego. So I don’t see real estate or rental prices dropping until Chinese investors run out of money.

Guam is actually more expensive in many ways than California.

Gasoline is 4.20 a gallon. Food is really high priced. Everything is expensive and the unemployment rate is fairly high.

Guam suffers (Thank you Bill Clinton) from hordes of people from other islands coming here to get on welfare. These are people so ignorant that they have to be told to not take their naked 7-year old child into the grocery store.

I see this in NYC. Motor homes so moldy and decrepit that it’s hard to believe the engines run, parked here and there around the city.

Look, no offense, but are you playing dumb?

Why do you think California is overrun by human debris?

Why on earth would you take it upon yourself to have other places, other people deal with the trash you won't take out yourself?

Go be do-gooder on your own place and time.

Unless you have a boat load of $$, Guam has higher cost of living that San Fran or even Hawaii. Unless you are accustomed to corrugated tin housing with cardboard door. There is no in-between on Guam.

I already suggested the boatlift, filled with money, if that's what it takes.

Best thing would be to drop them off an an island called Kapingamarangi. They would take to sea water baths and using the outhouses perched over the ocean on the leeward side. Crafting wooded and sea shell trinkets to barter with the Coasties that stop by once every 2 or 3 years....

Somebody from Guam advocating more people move to Montana?

We have enough trash here as it is.

Hayalite Canyon yesterday for the first time. You live in a beautiful part of Montana.

Sorry, I'm on a cheap phone. My phone fell 3 stories. This is an old phone.
