FULL TITLE: Unclaimed bodies pile up as opioid overdose death rates soar and burial costs overwhelm the government

Unclaimed bodies are piling up across the US as state and local governments struggle to keep up with payments to the funeral homes that spend thousands to bury them.

A 2004 report estimated that there are 40,000 unclaimed bodies stored in morgues across the US, and experts say that number has risen dramatically in recent years in part due to the opioid crisis.

More than 115 people die from opioid overdoses each day, and the most affected populations are those in lower income groups who are less likely to leave money behind to cover burial costs.

Funeral homes across the US have been overwhelmed by the number of bodies that need to be taken care of as they shoulder the cost and wait for government reimbursement.

I agree. Opioid dealers should get the death penalty.

What’s the matter with people today? Put ‘em in wood boxes, and plant ‘em. No embalming. Embalming is retarded. If the religion of the deceased is unknown, don’t mark their marker up with any religious symbol (terrible sin to many).

And there ya go: cheap, biodegradable and all. There’s plenty of room for everybody! Let’s stop freaking out about it.

Agreed! Duterte for Attorney General! Let’s finally have that drug war that everyone’s been yakking about. It hasn’t happened, yet.

"Cremation may be a good option."

True to some, but to many others, it's related to idolatry.

Maybe they don’t want to cremate them until they have been able to identify them and hand them over to their loved ones.

About your last statement, I am in agreement.

Why aren’t we seeing serious drug education about how opiates work, and how to use them for pain and not become addicted? Why aren’t we teaching kids and adults alike the utter dangers - avoidable- in opiate use?

The patients that I have seen are in their 20s-30s and were not addicted by physicians . These people are just , and I hate to say it, losers who were never going to go far in life.

Christians could never be creamated or ever encourage it.

It’s okay. Jesus will put them back together. See Jan Hus.

I know I’m not paying attention to this particular issue, but WTF?!

What on Earth is going on with this? Is this really this bad?

$500 is too much.
It costs about $125 to cremate a large dog. Why should the cost be more than this?

The fact is, while the Catholic Catechism forbids cremation, as does the tradition of several other sects, there is not prohibition against cremation in the New Testament.

And we have been freed from The Law of the Old Testament.

“Why should the cost be more than this?”

Paperwork and legal protocols for handling human bodies.

Doctors aren’t prescribing them like candy. I know people who are in misery because of the draconian anti-opioid restrictions. Doctors are terrified to prescribe them.

It’s sad how so-called “conservatives” cheer while Big Government is playing doctor. Doctors should be able to care for their patients without fear of the DEA fascists kicking down their doors. Let the doctors decide what is best for each patient, not the government.

It’s sad that peaceful, law-abiding citizens are being forced to go to the streets to get relief or even commit suicide because of their diminished quality of life.

Don’t get me wrong. I agree that, in many cases, opioids aren’t the answer. But, people who truly need them are suffering.

It won’t be long before post-surgery patients will be offered nothing stronger than an aspirin. That would make Jeff Sessions the happiest man on earth.
