He also didn't have his gun(s), backpack or duffel bag with him.
He ditched them in a 3rd floor stairwell and then blended in with the students exiting the scene.
He even had time in between to get a drink at a Subway outlet in the nearby Walmart.
Actually, it was not momentary, it was a full inspection by the teacher, who said she thought it was a policemen, and described the gear herself. Watch the video.
In a violent, split second chaotic time frame, can that teacher positively differentiate between a "gas mask" and a "face shield?"
Eyewitness accounts during such events are notoriously inaccurate.
2. All of the weapons and gear are out of site as he rides the Uber and enters the school.
3. Wearing a school shirt, he carries a black duffle bag and a black backpack inside. A 15-year-old student says he encounters Cruz loading a rifle inside a second-floor bathroom, according to news sources. “You’d better get out of here,” Cruz tells the student. “Things are going to start getting messy.” The student flees and alerts a staffer.. Inside the school he dons the gear, takes out the weapons, and begins his rampage.
4. After shooting several students, he ditches the weapon and his gear and blends in with the students fleeing the school. Police say Cruz discards his assault rifle and backpack in a third-floor stairwell and runs downstairs to join students fleeing the school. He goes to the Walmart, where he has a drink at a Subway outlet inside. He leaves and walks to a McDonald’s.
5. A half hour later, he is apprehended a mile away. Not a long way to walk in a half hour.
With the information known at this point, this appears to be the rough timeline.

So much confusion, weren’t the first reports that he was seen walking onto campus carrying a duffel bag? He could have everything in the bag and suited up in a restroom.
With all the confusion and terror after the shooting and the Sheriffs of Cowards County quaking outside, I would think he had time to change. And we really don’t know what this “body Armor” was, it could have just been something fake but scary looking. I doubt that people in a state of fear really looked that close, even if they really knew what to look for. In Cruz’s little video he is wearing an olive drab vest not full metal body armor, so what did he have and what did the teacher actually see?
In times of extreme stress, aka terror, the body is flooded with adrenalin. You could take five people who witnessed the same event and would probably get five different accounts of what they witnessed.,.....
Most likely.....since their sheriff specially said in regards to Sheriff

You can falsely remember if someone had brown hair or short hair, but you don’t falsely have a memory like “Oh, the police are here because I see someone wearing a helmet, body armor, and and gas mask.”
Either she saw this or she’s lying.
Maybe he ducked into a phone booth to change into his Super Villain costume, then changed back afterward?
Seriously though, It would seem plausible that he was carrying his outfit in the duffle or backpack and geared up after he was inside. He was not apprehended at the scene but a mile away, some time later.
I think she is saying she thought the shooter was a police guy? But was the killer in full gear like that?
She was in panic mode, she could very well have THOUGHT she saw mask, body armor and gas mask..........Intentionally lying? I'll let you be the judge..........
As have most moms and dads, I’ve experienced that auto pilot response in emergencies.
