Wisconsin teen's invention could save lives in shooting

A Wisconsin high school student was inspired by horrific school shootings to invent something that could save lives.

Somerset High School senior Justin Rivard invented a tool he calls the "JustinKase" in shop class. Made of steel plates and connecting rods, his device slips beneath a classroom door and latches to the door’s jam. With his device in place, Rivard has yet to find a person who can push a classroom door open, including linemen from his high school football team.

“You can lock a door with a lock, it can get shot out,” he says. “You can lock a door with this, it can't get shot out. You can't get around it.”

Rivard didn’t have to go far for his first big sale. Somerset High School ordered 50 of them, one for every classroom in the building.

“We started with the high school, then went to the middle school, then the elementary school,” says Shannon Donnelly, Somerset’s principal.

The JustinKase sells for $95.

Donnelly keeps a JustinKase under her desk as well. She expects everyone in the school to know how to use one.

“We immediately, within a week of having these, went through an entire drill, all throughout the building, really walking through students and staff,” she says.

Rivard already has delivered 54 of his devices to the Grantsburg School District in Wisconsin, with 40 more on the way.

He knows of at least one company making a similar device but says his can be put into place faster and costs less. Rivard is waiting for approval on his patent application.

Eric Olson is the technology and engineering teacher at Somerset High School. He’s not surprised by Rivard's creation.

“He's the special combination of motivation and brains and has a motor that just keeps going,” Olson says.

I know. And this guy pulled a fire alarm, evidently. We used that tactic back in 1979 We had a classmate with an uncanny resemblance to John Belushi. Dress him up as Bluto, have him enter the cafeteria and yell "Food fight!!". and it's the signal for a huge melee. Pull the fire alarm and they can't shut the doors to isolate the participants. We were good kids, though. 😊

Those events have cops in attendance. Unless you are in Parkland there is a good chance they will return fire.

For safety reasons, doors which are the only exit to a classroom are BY FIRE CODE required to open outwards. A simple pivot bar on the door will keep it closed.

Neither would have stopped Cruz as he tripped the fire alarm to get everyone out of the classrooms.

Now killers can use this to lock students into classrooms before setting a school on fire, without ever needing to go through a background check.

In TOTALLY UNRELATED news, it turns out that there is no technology that can save idiots from themselves. Interesting isn’t it?

Too true, but your assumption is sick because those stories are very much the exception.

Not the first door lock device on the market. This one hit the internet 3 years ago.

"Am I correct in remembering that no school shooter has yet breached a locked door?"

That's a very good question. Breaching a door, especially fire reinforced school doors, would be difficult. Reinforced entryways, vigilance with a robust security plan can minimize if not prevent outright an incident by substantially restricting movement. With an armed response, that helps substantially. From what I have observed, most attacks were carried out at the most vulnerable times, areas and especially when the teachers and student were essentially sitting ducks- just as liberals and school districts are perfectly fine with.

The fire axe in the hall would not be able to break through it.

Fire axe ... in a school hallway?

Can it be shot out. Has THAT been tested?

How does a shooter even know it's in place? A shooter has other targets in mind than to figure out how to open a door.........Sheesh!

The sick secret is the Sheriff gave a stand down order.
Who’s got the scanner recording.
Wait for it…- Eddie01
The Sheriff gave a stand-doen order?

????

Need link…

Clearly Eddie was predicting that there will be a link. It’s not much of an extrapolation from the fact that four (count ‘em, 4) of his deputies were present outside the school listening to the sound of 17 murders and none of them went in.

And that doesn’t count the deputy who was “monitoring” the event on 20 minute delay, thinking he was seeing real time - and not going in.

As I look back nearly 70 years high school shop classes are the ones I remember and use the most. Still a redneck wrench but it sure coulda been worse.

This shooter shot through the glass classroom windows in the door.

Remember though. someone set off the fire alarm so that kids would be in the halls like sitting ducks.

Perhaps the Broward boys and sheriff need to look into some silicone sex workers that be reprogramed to attack and neutralize shooters so their boys can go about their heavily fortified activities of choice.

If you flatten yourself on the wall with the door, he can’t see you. I remember all the glass in my schools having screen in them, so they wouldn’t shatter, so I’m thinking a shooter couldn’t break the glass and then reach in to open the door. Good chance to twist his arm off, otherwise.

I think actual exit doors have to swing out - most schools I have been in, the classroom doors opened in so they wouldn’t be out in the flow of traffic when everyone was on the move.

I think it depends on your fire code, if you state follows the International Fire Code it says the door must open in the direction of egress if the room has a capacity rated at 50 or more, must classrooms are rated 50+

Fire Code: 1010.1.2
