Which upcoming technology excites you? Which scares you?

Posted on 02/24/2018 7:48:22 AM PST by MNDude

The future of technology is looking for more amazing than ever. Technology will continue to shape our lives in positive and negative ways and will be used by the good in the evil alike.

The thought of self-driving cars seems exciting, but could it come with unforeseen drawbacks? It seems like computers that think like humans are always right around the corner. Will it be here in 10 years?

Which possible future technology are you most excited for, and which do you fear the most?

‘Scares’—innovations for evil purposes

On a general level, I have always been concerned that advances in technology will greatly exceed mankind's advances in ethics. If Hitler and the Nazis would have had today's technology, the Holocaust would have been magnitudes worse. It would have been much more difficult for Jewish people to evade the Gestapo in the occupied territory. GPS on cell phones would say 'here we are.' Thermal imaging would have eliminated most hiding spots. DNA testing would have eliminated denials of ancestry. Communications would be greatly limited because of the Gestapo's ability to monitor. Data storage on multiple computers and servers would have left incriminating data despite attempts to clean files.

New technology is not for old folks. This grandmother reaction to Google Home is hysterical...

Im in LE. All I have to do to find you is have a magistrate judge sign my warrant and I can ping your cell and go get you. When self-driving cars come on line I will have your car bring you to me or I will lock you in your immobilized car and go pick you up. I will even turn the heat on so your uncomfortable until I get there. Otherwise i will use your smart home technology to tell me how many people are in your home and - through your smart thermostat - when you come and leave. If you wont come out of your house for arrest, Ill turn the heat up and turn off your refrigerator and your water and set off your security alarm (that will get old). I am tied to my cell phone and my boss knows it and calls me during non work hours, to work. Even if Im out shopping or with my family. Social media creates, packages, and sells dossiers on you for corporate sales and LE background checks. We know who you vote for, where you work, your search history, who you sleep with, and generally, everything about you including your kids’ names and where they go to school. Say, for example, we are tasked with confiscating your firearms; we can have your children taken through family children services for having an unsafe home. To get your kids back, you will bring me your guns (or your wife will). Drones are being incorporated to recognize crimes and issue tickets. For jay walking, improper parking, riding a bike through a stop sign, not coming to a complete stop at a stop sign, not signaling properly in a vehicle or on a bicycle, etc - every time you do it even if it’s three times a day.

Your self driving car will not speed. Even if it is taking you to the ER during a heart attack. If it does speed, my LE drone will immobilize the car and write you a ticket while you die on the side of the road.

Just some general examples of how increased technology can decrease your freedom; in these instances, through increased (and over burdensome) law enforcement, internet connectivity, self-driving cars, and cell phone tethering. I really can go on for a while on this topic.

Every “convenience” brought to you by technology comes with a loss of privacy and anonymity which is also a loss of freedom in itself.

I know Timothy Leary played around with LSD, I know the military played around with LSD, I know there was (is?) a program called MKULTRA and I believe there are others ....

Yes, I believe him.

And I have a theory ..... those of us with tinnitus can't be affected so easily.

Excites me: Continuing expansion of wireless bandwidth and capacity. Development of virtual reality technologies.

Scares me: Home automation, the government's long-time dream implementation of a wiretap in very home.
