When Ragen Chastain sets a goal, she wants it to be nearly unattainable. Which is how she went from hating running to signing up for a marathon.
I decided I wanted to try a challenge and jump out of my comfort zone, and distance running had always been the thing that I was worse at in the entire world, Chastain, 41, a speaker and writer, tells PEOPLE. So I signed up for a marathon first thing.

She will kill her knees - most people should NOT run.
That is IF she runs. I have a hefty coworker who claims she runs in marathons. Walking is not running. She has lost zero weight. But still claims to be a runner!! Yea, right!!
“I wanted to ... jump out of my comfort zone ... “ (and into the adjacent zip code).
Next challenge, snowboarding on the half-pipe.
I’m reminded of the old Redd Foxx joke about the shoe salesman with a lisp who asked the fact lady “What th-ize?”
Congratulations on your weight loss!
No offense but she would just good a chance of winning Miss America with a lot less effort!!
I had a former rather hefty co-irker that stated often that she did not eat this or that but routinely busted.
Which is just another way of saying "Look at me, look at meee!"
The thing is, you're fat and I don't want to look at you.
That’s a WHOLE lot of lovin.
No matter, guilty.

Good for her, but she could injure her lower body. Maybe she should take up a swimming challenge. Another good thing, maybe she sees how eating protein (and fat) builds her strength and stamina up better than carbs, and changes hr diet. That will help too.
We should all applaud her. Lots of people are nearing 300 lbs. they arent all working out and getting stronger, like she is. Good for her. Her blood pressure is going down and I bet even her brain is getting less foggy.
I never refer to it as a loss. Loss implies I miss it or am looking for it. Ive dropped it and dont intend to put it back. And thats knyou very much.
My hat is off to her. Quite an accomplishment, and she should be pround. Like you, I hope her determination continues to go in healthy and good directions.
The Ironman has a swimming component, plus biking. It still contains a full marathon, though. She is probably walking rather than running.
She is probably being encouraged in her training program to eat lots of carbs for fuel, though. That is okay if you are burning thousands of calories a day like top athletes, but she should be cutting carbs.
After leaving the service I got up into the high 190s (6’1”) for awhile. Played some sand-lot football and pickup basketball. Then my girlfriend (the future Mrs. JimRed, 44 years now) introduced me to skiing, helping her chaperone a high school ski trip. I got hooked, and started running a little to get in decent condition. That led to signing up for one of the first five mile runs in our area, in our town. Hooked again; finished 125th out of about 500 on little training base and was told it was amazing. Six years later I toed the starting line at the Boston Marathon at 157. Broke three hours. People who hadn’t seen me for a while asked if I had cancer!
Fast forward: now 178-182; rec b’ball 2-4 times a week, jogging through a few 5Ks and five milers, but one arthritic knee prevents serious training. Still, God’s been better to me than I deserve.
Argh! @#$%! spell check.
“Fact” should be “Fat.”

Biking is a LOT less strain on the legs but it is hard on the neck and shoulders.
I’ve always been big. I was 325 in high school, ballooned to 390 in college, dropped a bunch of weight in my late 20s (down to 220), got married and jumped back up to 340, quit drinking 17 months ago, changed my diet, went back to the gym, and I’m hovering around 280 right now.
It feels amazing to eat well, feel good about myself, and just be in a generally better mood.
She can eat more carbs on race day, sure. No need to eat them during training, at least no need to eat any processed carbs ever. Even race day, she can get her carbs from potatoes and fruit.
If she forgets about her weight and just focuses on her sport(s), she will by default slowly lose weight.
