Three errors they likely won’t be able to recover from here at the Olympics short program Wednesday. “I’m mad,” said Nagasu, who is ninth place. “I’m upset.” “I am not going to lie, I am pretty disappointed in myself,” said Chen, who is in 10th. “We’re all human,” said Tennell, who is in 11th. “We make mistakes.” The United States hasn’t won a medal in ladies’ figure skating since 2006, when Sasha Cohen took silver. Barring a miraculous comeback, that streak will extend to 2022 in Beijing. It’s a major fall from grace for U.S. Figure Skating, which was once an international powerhouse.

You do know that Norway is the all-time leader in Winter Olympic medals. This is nothing new for them.

Figure skating is not as lucrative as it was 15-20 years ago, at least in North America. After the Tonya Harding incident, there were dozens of televised skating events, and eventually people got tired of it. Since there is less money to be earned in skating in the US, fewer kids are doing in now.
It also doesn’t help that the professional circuit is mostly gone. Skaters used to have long post-olympic careers, while focusing on more artistic programs and not having to do so many jumps. I used to love the World Pro Championships in Landover and Stars on Ice.

The U.S. is 6th in the medal count. That wouldn’t seem to be so bad ... except that we have double the population of numbers one through five combined. Maybe they’re all too stoned in Colorado to compete anymore.
maybe they just aren’t that good. a lot of things in this country aren’t what they used to be. too much over analyzing versus just practicing until you get it down pat is the new rage.. and way too many distractions
If someone added up the US population in the areas where decent winter sports facilities are available, it would probably be about 1/4 of our total population, if that. But still, several nations with smaller populations no matter how we view it, have always done better in the Winter Olympics.
I think the relative popularity of winter sports in different nations is a major factor in how many good competitors they produce for the Winter Olympics. There are all sorts of sports in US to take up kids’ time, sports developed here and those imported like soccer.
I knew Norway was always around the top in Winter Olympics medals. Didn’t know they were the all time leaders.
The Nordic countries... throw in Lichtenstein, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Italy... look at the mix of sports. Luge? Bobsledding? Not much there for Americans not living in the Rockies or Sierra Nevadas.
Even if you combined East Germany with Germany they still don’t add up to Norway’s count.

Our athletes are NOT what they used to be, that Japanese men’s gold medalist WAS AMAZING, could watch him ALL DAY!!! You could SEE the passion he has for his sport his passion spews from every pore in his body!!! I did not SEE that passion in our skaters!!! I used to LOVE watching the Olympics US fighting tooth and nail against Russia our athletes were something to behold not so much anymore!!!!!
Speaking of the Japanese, my all-time favorite Olympic story is about the Japanese men's gymnast, Shun Fujimoto, who competed with a broken leg in order to allow the Japanese Men's Gymnastics team to win the Gold in the team competition.
When Tokyo hosts the Games in 2020, he should be the one to light the Olympic Flame.
Is the Jamaican bobsled team at this year’s Winter Olympics?
From a U.S. perspective, we would be wise to lead the charge to finally end national team competition while we can do it from a position of strength. We are going to look shabby when Americans start grumbling about how China wins four times as many medals as we do. Which they will, in time. And if India ever gets serious about sports -- an open question, I think -- they will win even more. We should have annual world championships in sports whose structures allow for it. In team sports, that should be based on club competition, drawn from normal league play, not national team competition.
