A sheriff in Ohio thinks one way to prevent mass shootings at schools is to arm teachers and make sure they know how to protect their students.
One day after the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in South Florida, which left 17 people dead, Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones posted a video to Facebook explaining that the current way we do things in the school system needs to be changed.
We need to put armed personnel in schools, he said in the video. We need to look at metal detectors. This is not going to stop or go away but we need to be prepared and we dont need to have our heads in the sand.

If the six dead adults at Sandy Hook could have a do-over, I’d bet they prefer to have met Adam Lanza with a gun of their own.
I’m glad that people are taking the classes, but every classroom should be equipped with door jams and hinge jamps to keep those doors locked upon notice that a school has a wondering gun man.
How many retired experienced shooters would volunteer to teach the teachers gun safety and how many gun ranges would volunteer gun range time? Think about it. Why he sent his letter to KBitch first is beyond me. Should have just tweeted his video to POTUS. Lots of government department have a sh!tload of ammo. Barky bought it for them in his plan of One World Government. Wouldn’t need to even cost a dime other than the pistols. All for it, but do it smart.
What happens if that same gangster steals the teacher’s gun and blocks the door?
By your question, the safest thing to do is nothing.
Good thread.
Agreed. A .223 can unlock a door with
probably a few rounds. A shooter,
knowing he will be confronted with
equal or greater force, will think
twice about attempting a dastardly
deed, unless the shooter has suicidal
tendencies. Which in the case of Mr.
Cruz, have been reported. Sadly,
there was no follow up as to the
help and treatment this young man
needed.
AFTER 9-11..THEY ALLOWED PILOTS TO CARRY...BROUGHT BACK AIR MARSHALLS...JUST COMMON SENSE.
I agree with your comment on training. However, this guy pulled the fire alarm, which by training and drills had students file into the hallway then out to a designated place to have roll called and reported. Thus, leading his victims right to him - kinda like a shooting booth. One last thing, is it me or did none of the news organizations make a mention that it was Ash Wednesday, but all of them mentioned that it was Valentines Day.
Your nanny statism is showing.
You're on the wrong forum. DU is wondering where you went.
Hello, if teachers werw allowed to CC, then some *gangster student* wouldn't get away with it.
For that matter, if schools were allowed to kick out trouble makers, it wouldn't happen.
The government can't even run the DMV and you want them to protect us from ourselves?
Let’s get the gangsters out of the classroom before they cause this problem.
My position is that I’m very pro Second Amendment. I may be Canadian, but I trust the gun culture in the States implicitly.
I simply recognize that not everybody is going to be useful in wandering the halls with a gun in their hands. I wouldn’t expect an 85 year old teacher, who is in otherwise great health, to be involved in securing the gunman. In cases where a person would be more useful to stay in the classroom, or to simply prevent a potential hostage situation, because a teacher is able to be involved in securing the gunman, the classroom still needs to be secured to prevent the gunman from entering and holding kids hostage. That’s where securing the door becomes vital and there are options. For a relatively few dollars, you can secure most classroom doors so they are quite secure and near impossible to break with a saw that can cut through a classroom door.
“What happens if a gangster student uses the door jam to keep people out while he/she rapes and kills? Who will be responsible for that? “
That’s generally a ridiculous point. If you honestly believe that gangsters are just lying in wait for the teacher to leave before trying to kill everybody, then every teacher should not leave the room at all. The killer should be free to roam the school and enter classrooms freely, until the police come.
An 85 year old teacher?
Not in any school I've ever heard of.
Most teachers I know are so disgusted with the deterioration that has happened in the public school system over the last couple decades, that they are retiring ASAP.
Besides, if someone is carrying, it doesn't matter if they are in a wheelchair.
Also, the teacher is not alone in the classroom. Any classroom that has kids old enough to be gangsters, has kids old enough to be heroes.

What’s that old saw? “Common sense isn’t all that common.”
I was part of that group. What a Sisyphian goat rope it was to get it approved. Time after time I got the feeling that they’d rather see all of us dead than approve it.
