Editors Note: This story contains spoilers for the film Black Panther.
Black Panthers Wakanda is a near-utopic vision of how a country could look; perhaps the best depiction of Afrofuturism ever captured on film. There were thriving and ideological-diverse cities surrounded by expansive and bucolic countrysides. There was modern technology perfectly weaved in to cultural tradition, a melding that was symbiotic instead of antagonistic. And while I didnt see this happening during the movie, Im sure Wakanda has amazing bottomless brunches.
Unfortunately, a present-day attempt to recreate Wakanda would be unrealistic. Mainly because were roughly 20,000 years behind Wakandan tech. And mostly because were too infected with colonization and its myriad residues and peripheral effects. Also, were a little short on Vibranium.
One thing, however, that we can and definitely should start doing is what MBaku and his Que Dog Jabari Tribe did when encountering a problematic white dude who was speaking when there was no ask or need or purpose for the thoughts and opinions of problematic white dudes.
Bark.
Not a purposeless bark. This isnt a shih tzu barking through the window at a squirrel. Instead this would be an intentional bark. A targeted bark. An overpowering bark. A drowning bark. A Wakandan bark. A bark meant to communicate Um, who told you that you can speak? When it is time for your words, we will let you know. And maybe that time will never come. Well see. Now, just shut up and stand there. Maybe get on your phone and google How not to be a colonizer. Whatever you do, I want to hear you not speaking.

Things have gotten worse for blacks since the 1960s because their “leaders” told them to sign up for welfare as reparations, programs that pushed fathers out of the home and people out of the workforce. This created intergenerational poverty that had previously been on the decline and sky high crime rates that hadn’t existed a generation before.

Academics teach that the breakdown of the black family is the legacy of slavery and discrimination. They ignore the following facts. In 1950, 72 percent of black men and 81 percent of black women had been married. Also, only 17 percent of black children lived in single-parent households; today it’s close to 70 percent. Every census from 1890 to 1950 showed that black labor force participation rates exceeded those of whites. During the late 1940s, the unemployment rate for black 16- and 17-year-olds was less than that for white teens.

Down, boy.

OK, I hate too, but I’m being forced to “go there”.
What in the WORLD can the Black Community (all good Patriots like Sheriff Clarke, Tommy S, etc. excluded) point to that would indicate in the LEAST that they are somehow superior to “whitey”?
Besides dunking a basketball or modern “dancing” there is literally NOTHING that would indicate superiority across the spectrum.
Again, I apologize to all black Patriots, but I’m starting to get damned angry because I thought we were supposed to ignore skin tone and judge people by their hearts, minds and souls.......forgive the rant.
Yeah, w*gg*r, shut up and get me some coffee!
Such a bigoted article. Racism on the left is alive and well.
Africa is only half civilized because they were colonized. What’s in this movie won’t happen under the present social paradigm.
This is an excellent way to demonstrate to show that you are not a bunch of animals.
Those “regular elections” were the only thing keeping the minority safe from the savages.
Now they are not safe.
So this guy thinks that grunting like an ape to signify that he has precedence in speaking, will indicate to us his cultural superiority?
