Police arrested a Vermont teenager on Thursday after they say he threatened to cause mass casualties at Fair Haven Union High School.
Jack Sawyer, 18, of Poultney, is currently held without bail and set to be arraigned Friday afternoon in Rutland Superior criminal court, police said.
He faces charges of attempted aggravated murder, attempted first-degree murder and attempted aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to police.
Starting Wednesday and continuing into Thursday, members of the Fair Haven Police Department and Vermont State Police detectives have been investigation a threat of a school shooting at Fair Haven Union High School, police said.
Over the course of the investigation police said they learned that Sawyer communicated his desire to cause mass casualties at the high school. Police said Sawyer was taken into custody Thursday. The investigation is continuing, according police.
According to Fair Haven Police, at about 5 p.m. Wednesday police and high school officials received information about a possible threat against the high school. Police said the high school was then placed on restricted access and all returning sports teams being bused back to the school were rerouted to another location.
Fair Haven Police said that after investigating they were able to locate all parties mentioned in the information and were unable to substantiate any threat against the school.
Police learned of the threat in Fair Haven just hours after the shooting that killed 17 people at a high school in Florida.
On Thursday, Fair Haven Police said investigators developed new information leading to Sawyers arrest.
Anyone who has had recent contact with Sawyer is asked to call Vermont State Police at 802-773-9101.
It’s a complex issue what to do with such a teenager.
I’m all for civil liberties, but they belong to people who can distinguish between right and wrong and can distinguish between when, if you have such thoughts, you do not express them nor allow them to simmer. If he just returned a few days ago and now expresses this kind of thing, he damn well better go back. And I mean, for 6 months minimum.
It will be interesting to see what deeper investigation reveals. Wondering if his parent sent him to Maine so Vermont authorities wouldn’t know? Vermont has a terrible record of inputting mental defectives to NICS and it doesn’t appear Maine put him in the system either.
It’s just a matter of time before the next one.
When are the schools and students going to be secured?
When? How many more?
We apparently do not care at all.
Full admission, I have not done any research on this.
All happened in the past three days, so not a lot of info out yet. Appears one girl called the local police and they took action; good thing she didn’t call the FBI.
Why don’t you try changing the Constitution if you don’t like it.
There’s nothing in the Constitution that schools and students cannot be secured.
Why don’t you try reading my post before you respond to it.
Was murder really “attempted,” or were there only words?
OK. I wasn’t sure how you meant it. I guess I do now.
Alright! No problem at all. I could have worded it better.
I want the schools fortified and the students protected by trained and armed men. All of them, all the time.
How is he charged with “attempted” murder when all he’s done is run his mouth? Besides, wouldn’t saying you’re going to kill someone be considered free speech?
It should be like threatening the president. Interview and assess, if the threat is real then there are places to send them to get help or at least keep us safe.
There is nothing in the Constitution about schools and students period. There is plenty in there about liberties. Schools and students are not distinguished as being special. We all have the same liberties and restrictions.
No $hit.
Thanks for stating the blatantly obvious for no apparent reason whatsoever.
I’m all for locking up these morons and CERTAINLY preventing them from getting firearms
In fact I think the legal age for firearms should be 21
A ballot is more dangerous than a gun. AND you are old enough to handle a gun at 18 in the molitary.
This sounds like overreach to me. Having the coos question the kid is fine. The article said he never threatened anyone.
I remember about 10 years ago when the press was all aghast about nooses. Some high school band members were talking about it and someone asked if anyone knew how to tie a noose. One band member said he could but he would not do it or show someone how to do it.
They arrested this student.
Do these cops want a job running the FBI?
It would not have helped if you had. Half a century ago the ACLU funded a movement to prevent pre-emptive hospitalization of crazy people who were expected to do harm. After watching too many Betty Davis movies, the courts and legislators bought into the notion that civil liberties precluded holding these crazies until they have actually harmed someone or themselves. Or, pretty close to that. It is so embedded one cannot possibly change the law.
