In his 2000 book, The America We Deserve, Trump criticized Republicans who walk the NRA line and refuse even limited restrictions on firearms laws.
Its often argued that the American murder rate is high because guns are more available here than in other countries. After a tragedy like the massacre at Columbine High School, anyone could feel that it is too easy for Americans to get their hands on weapons. But nobody has a good solution, he wrote.
This is another issue where you see the extremes of the two existing major parties, continued Trump, who, at the time of his books publication, was considering running for president but hadnt declared his bid. Democrats want to confiscate all guns, which is a dumb idea because only the law-abiding citizens would turn in their guns and the bad guys would be the only ones left armed. The Republicans walk the NRA line and refuse even limited restrictions.
Trump added that he supported the 1994 federal assault weapons ban, which later expired in 2004 and was not renewed by Congress.
I generally oppose gun control, but I support the ban on assault weapons and I also support a slightly longer waiting period to purchase a gun. With todays Internet technology we should be able to tell within 72 hours if a potential gun owner has a record, Trump wrote.
December 2012:
Trump supported then-President Barack Obamas call for stronger gun control after the shooting at a Newtown, Connecticut, elementary school that left 26 people dead, including 20 children.
President Obama spoke for me and every American in his remarks in #Newtown Connecticut.

Good thing Trump has “evolved” on this.
Yes...
Has he?
So far, so good.
I heard that the Florida school shooter was an adopted DACA baby. Still waiting for confirmation, however.
People MAGAzine?
Well, I can see ONE thing good with that.
If he was adopted, then DACA is no longer the issue.
Yep - that’s why he’s been so successful in life - he is able to recognize mistakes, admit that he made them, and correct them.
He has - anyone that’s been paying attention knows he hasn’t wavered when he came out as one who now believes and trusts the basis of the 2nd Amendment...the Dems think they have a wedge but they are tugging on their own undies....
If you have ARMED GUARDS, it’s pretty hypocritical to say you are against guns!
Watch out, though. He’s from New York. There’s a whole different world full of foreign thought there. I would suggest rural and small town perspectives. Most of our country is rural with very small towns.
Whatever Trump’s views now, he’s being savaged by the press for rescinding some rule Obama passed about the mentally ill not having guns - except that the rule branded as mentally ill those whose only problem was that they couldn’t handle their own Social Security checks and tried to deny them access to firearms - and a slew of liberal disability advocacy groups including the ACLU supported what Trump did.....
Show me where he hasn't......
Trump has had solid, stable views on several major issues. Here he is talking about North Korea...in the 90s:
