Do Not, I Repeat, Do Not Download Onavo, Facebook’s Vampiric VPN Service
Gizmodo ^ | Dell Cameron

Facebook is not a privacy company; it’s Big Brother on PCP. It does not want to anonymize and protect you; it wants to drain you of your privacy, sucking up every bit of personal data. You should resist the urge to let it, at every turn.

There’s a new menu item in the Facebook app, first reported by TechCrunch on Monday, labeled “Protect.” Clicking it will send you to the App Store and prompt you to download a Virtual Private Network (VPN) service called Onavo. (“Protect” shows up in the iOS app. Gizmodo looked for it on an Android device and didn’t see it—though, presumably it is only a matter of time.)

VPNs work by forcing your laptop or mobile device to establish a connection to a third-party server before then connecting you to any websites or online services. Using an encrypted tunnel, a VPN can prevent your broadband or wireless provider (AT&T, Comcast, et al) from keeping track of the websites you visit. What’s more, a VPN service can mask your own IP address from those websites, helping you to traverse the net without surrendering locational data. VPNs also help users in authoritarian countries bypass censors by convincing websites their country of origin is, for example, the US or Switzerland, the latter of which has some of the world’s strictest privacy laws.

Facebook, however....is actually collecting and analyzing the data of Onavo users. Doing so allows Facebook to monitor the online habits of people outside their use of the Facebook app itself. For instance, this gave the company insight into Snapchat’s dwindling user base, even before the company announced a period of diminished growth last year.

To put it another way, Onavo is corporate spyware.

Good post

Facebook is not to be trusted

With a little effort, FreeRepublic could BECOME a better (and more free) version of Facebook.

It was here BEFORE all these place and JimRob should have been an internet billionaire.

But at least he didn’t sell out to ‘the man’

I find I use facebook less and less. And in my entire life I’ve only bought one phone app: Winamp.

Comically, they went out of business, so I chose poorly.

And for that reason everything to do with Facebook functionality is blocked on all my devices.

It would have to completely change platforms. As long as you have to actually type in html code to get pictures to show up, and still CAN’T post youtube videos, but only cut and paste links, it’s not ready for prime time.

When people that are used to modern forum site engines see how this site works, they react a bit more negatively than those of us who have been here a long time. We’re used to tht quirks and work arounds to get stuff to work. They are not and for many of them it’s a show stopper.

For that matter never ever use a free VPN service, and be careful about paid ones.

Actually it would take a lot of effort and a lot of money. The best way to monetize FR is to sell content. I don't think the Jim is into that, I'm sure he likes money, but I don't think he likes that.

I recognizer Facebook for what it is from the very beginning. Never been a member - never will.
As for FR becoming another Facebook, get lost! Do you realize where you are? What a Jerk.

I use it just to keep up with family and friends afar. As for political discussions, I have ceased from doing so on FB.

Same here. Over time it’s just become an echo chamber.

It’s really fun to get into it on some youtube videos though. The left is amazingly childish and it shows there, beautifully. :)

Have no desire to come even close to Facebook. I avoid it and all "social media" like the plague.

I use the Private Internet Access company mentioned in the last paragraph. Never had a problem. They off IP addresses from all over the world you can use.

Its OK to like money, we like capitalism here.

But ... $millionaire or $Billionaire

Lazmataz and I are software engineers - we’ve talked about it and we could beef up this site in no time.

And any advertising would HAVE be ‘no strings attached’ - in other words they don’t get to have any say in the site content or editorial review. Take it or leave it condition.
