LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Bruce would not stop whining and scratching at the door Tuesday.

The urgency of the noises drew Abby Leathers over to let out her pit bull out the front door, which was strange, since he usually goes out back.

Bruce, who is named after Batman’s alter ego, ran outside and directly to a pond where a half-naked woman was standing in the water trembling, confused and scared, Leathers said.

This Pitbull will have to turn in his Pitbull card.
A real Pitbull (or Kennedy) would have held the lady's head under water until she drowned.
Hopefully he isn't shunned by his other Pitbull friends.

Good boy. Batman is Bruce Wayne’s alter ego though, not the other way around.

"...half-naked woman shivering in a pond..."

She was apparently an Ethiopian dreamer unable to communicate with her rescuer.

“police said they had received a call about a missing elderly woman nearby. Her family rushed over and identified her. She was speaking an Ethiopian dialect known as Amharic.”

Just another ‘dreamer’.

Bruce was desperately hoping his mommy would say “sic ‘em!”

I love my resue pitbull, Tux.

He is the most loving, least aggressive dog I have ever owned.

A 95 pound gentle giant.

At 95 lb. he’s probably an American Staffordshire Terrier, a breed that looks a lot like American Pit Bull Terriers, but is about twice as large. I know. Thirteen years ago I adopted a puppy who was advertised as half Great Dane and half black Lab. As he grew up, however, he came to look more and more like a “Pit Bull.” Finally, a couple of years ago, after I’d met a pure bred AST, I decided to give him a DNA test. Turned out he is half AST. a quarter Lab, an eighth Golden, and an eighth Cocker Spaniel. He’s every bit as great a dog as yours.

We rescued him from the loc shelter. Butchered ears and nobody wanted him at 3 1/2 years old. I wasn’t sure myself. But my son fell in love with him so I figured we’d give it a try.

Now he’s just part of the family and all the delivery guys love him!.

My guy and I were both lucky; he was only about 11 weeks old and had been given excellent foster care. No mutilation of ears or tail. The only abuse he ever suffered was being painfully taught cat manners by my then kitty, an experience for which he received no sympathy from me.

My first AST was a rescue from the streets. He had an ability to smell sickness before my husband or I knew hubbie was sick. The dog would body block me to keep me away from the sickness. He saved hubbie’s life more than once. Because he did this on his own, he qualified legally as a service animal. I had him 14 years until I discovered he had cancer. I never got over the loss of that dearest of friends.

I now have a new blue AST, got her as a pup. She’s 5 this year, and she too helps me a lot. She’s begun to recognize when I’m having blood sugar drops in my sleep, and she wakes me up. She pulls and carries loads for me, and helps me walk when I am weak. She stays close when she knows I am upset..a necessity when you have a heart condition. She too does alot, does it on her own, and is legally considered my assistant. She’s a joy to have if I want to swim on a hot day as she will pull me around on my float device. She’s obcessive about swimming, so this job is a joy for her. She will go wherever I ask her to take me.

She also knows how to ride alongside a bicycle. I taught her that last summer while I still had energy. The result is a well behaved dog when I have to hang on to a wheel basket. Eventually, she will pull that basket/cart for me.

The eager to please and obcessive essential of an Am Staff is both a strength and a weakness. There has to be a positive channel for those qualities which involves both the animal and the handler, because it’s also the foundation of relationship with humans in general. They have a way of communicating with their human that’s unlike any other dog I’ve ever known. If it shows aggression as a baby, it should be called from the litter. And you have to know the difference.

I can’t go to the humane society. It’s too much for me emotionally to see all those beautiful, wonderful pits who are doomed to the blast furnace if they don’t get a home.

If I could own more, I would in a heartbeat. I had mine spayed so that none of her progeny would ever suffer that fate. Too many out there already need homes.

And to think I was scared spitless of my first one...I have to ask myself..what was I thinking???? It was all ignorance and false information.

My guy, named Ulysses, is very friendly and one of the most self-confident, self-assertive dogs I have ever known. The most extraordinary thing he’s done is training my Great Dane, Canute. I got Canute as a nine week old puppy. Being a puppy, Canute liked to get into things and his primary target was Ulysses, who would have none of it. When Canute would nip Ulysses, Ulysses would erupt with a blood curdling snarl, flip Canute onto his back, and Canute would literally scream for mercy. Ulysses, however, would never bite Canute and there was never a drop of blood; instead it was all brilliant canine training and socializing.

Anyway, after only a little bit of this Canute got the idea and he and Ulysses became the best of friends and wild, silly, roughhousing playmates chasing each other in circles and doing doggie WWE. With doggie WWE they appear to attack each other, snap and snarl at each other, show all of their teeth, but never injure each other or even draw any blood. Now Ulysses acts as Canute’s mentor and closest friend; often that goes so far as often grooming him. Canute reciprocates by looking to Ulysses as his leader in all things, being intensely loyal to Ulysses, and showing deep compassion and concern if Ulysses has a medical problem and Canute’s not allowed to go along to the vet with him.

The big problem with all of this is Ulysses is now 13 and Canute’s 8, meaning there’s only so much time left for the three of us together.

Now I’m going to get flamed because Ulysses, being half AST, is what’s called a “Pit Bull” (HORRORS!!). That means I should be terrified of him and he and Canute should have collaborated to hunt down and eat at least half of the small children in the neighborhood. It’s not happened yet, but you never can tell. . .
