Michelle Obama Unveiled Her Official Portrait – The Audience Reaction Says It All

An official portrait of former first lady Michelle Obama was unveiled at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery Monday morning. The painting was done by Baltimore artist Amy Sherald, who is known for her social justice painting style.

Ms. Sherald ain't no Ingres. It takes a special artist to make a frumpy woman even more unappealing.

Another case of “That’s what passes for art?” situations. To be honest, she did not have much of a subject with which to go from.

Looks like most of her supporters even thought the painting “needed more Michelle” in it.

“Let’s just start by saying, ‘Wow,’ again. Let me just take a minute. It’s amazing. Wow,” Obama said after the portrait was unveiled. The moment was met with a gasp and applause.

“What you think?” she asked her mother, Marian Robinson. “It’s pretty nice, isn’t it?”

Really? It looks like a high school art project not something to hang in the Smithsonian. But, it is Michelle’s choice so on that point I say go for it. If she is happy, then my opinion does not count

Bad artist teamed with bad subject, results about as expected. Affirmative action, a social justice painter instead of a skilled painter is priceless. I’ll give her credit for having an American do the painting instead of outsourcing it to China or India. Sad that Martin Luther King’s statue was outsourced to China and he now looks Chinese. But that’s another topic for another day.
