Beulah Annan murdered her lover and blamed it on gin. Hiram Bingham III opened the wonders of Machu Picchu to the world. Jeff Dowd did nothing but smoke a lot of weed and just be his hippie self.

There’s no telling what it takes to become a fictionalized legend. According to the new book “Any Resemblance to Actual Persons: The Real People Behind 400+ Fictional Movie Characters,” by Hal Erickson (McFarland), the range of traits and accomplishments that can get one’s life turned into movie magic is as broad and mysterious as Hollywood itself. Just consider the names mentioned above, who inspired, respectively, the characters of Roxie Hart, Indiana Jones and the Dude from “The Big Lebowski.”

How is it “iconic” hasn’t become a “banned word” yet?

By the way, that’s the only movie where Rene Zellweger is attractive. They must have locked her in her dressing room while the buffets were open.

All I know about Machu Picchu I learned from J. Pennypacker.

Are these free?

I agree. Her only expressive face looks like she just bit into a sour pickle. Never understood her appeal.

It’s not a movie character, but I had read that Buddy Sorell from the Dick Van Dyke Show was based on Mel Brooks.

“Hitchcock once said a movie is life with the dull parts cut out.

That seals it. My life will never be on the big screen.

In a form of poetic justice, the beautiful murderess Beulah Annan died of tuberculosis at the Chicago Municipal Sanitarium within a few years of her acquittal. Belva Gaertner eventually reconciled with her husband.

One factor glossed over by many films is that Illinois did not permit female jurors until 1938 (long after women were permitted to vote). As such, it was standard practice for defense attorneys to permit female clients to swoon and engage in “woe is me” tactics for the jury.

One of the best movies ever made is now a little diminished for me.

I wish “the Dude” had remained a fictional character based on a conglomeration of old hippies I know.

I never understood its appeal. Sam Elliot was the best part.

As I posted earlier, heard of the movie, never seen it. Cannot stand that fat slob Goodman or whoever that was.

Morey Amsterdam, who played Buddy was a vaudeville and borscht belt comedian for many years. I think he played himself. I read that the scripts often said “buddy tells jokes for 30 seconds”
