Interesting. I heard recently of communist members of the OSS being allowed to a certain extent at least initially because they were needed to liaise with the resistance in France, which was mostly communist, and that some of this carried over into the CIA despite James Angleton. Anyone know more on this?

Yes, for the Nazis, I actually did a bit of reading on this-alas I don’t remember all details. However, operation paperclip -brought in a bunch of Nazis.

Now there were guidelines, but sometimes the Nazi might not meet the exact guidelines, so a sanitized version was paper clipped to the file.

So in addition to the scientists, we had a good many brought in to be part of the OSS/CIA - Maybe the current batch of bad actors are the children of the Nazis? Hitler was very into the Occult, magic etc.

In addition we did have Commies in the Government - Alger Hiss comes to mind - he was FDRs right hand man setting up the UN, IIRC. Some claim that the changes that FDR made was to synch our system up to combine with USSR. I make no assertions in that regard - not something I have researched that much.

I believe that the OSS had a proclivity for Ivy Leaguers with a communist/socialist bent regardless of any specific French need for fellow travelers.
