A Man Who Could Finally Afford To See A Doctor After Winning The Lottery Died Three Weeks Later

Along with the usual things that come with winning the lottery — a new car, a vacation — Donald Savastano was excited about finally being able to see a doctor after winning a $1 million prize in December.

The self-employed carpenter in New York told local media he hadn't been able to afford to do so because he lacked health insurance. But the doctor visit yielded devastating news: Savastano, 51, had stage 4 metastatic cancer.

He died on Friday, just weeks after claiming his prize money.

"He was self-employed. He didn't have insurance. He hadn't been feeling good for a while, I guess, and when he got the money he went in to the doctor," Danielle Scott, who worked at the store where Savastano purchased the winning ticket, told ABC 7.

“Yup, he likely paid the penalty not to have Obamacare and made too much for Medicaid. Then if he DID have Obamacare, it would have been with a $6K or so deductible. CT scans are approaching $10K these days. Poor guy.”

The way the prices and deductibles have been going up, he was likely looking at 700-800 a month on the exchange for himself with a large deductible like you said, and a average/lousy coverage percentage of 70% or less.

And he likely would have had to go to lousy hospitals.

The ACA has hit middle-class, self-employed people harder than just about everyone else.

We will probably see more of this. A lot of people dropped health insurance to avoid going bankrupt courtesy of Obamacare.

“The ACA has hit middle-class, self-employed people harder than just about everyone else.”

Which is exactly what it was designed to do.

Sad.

You can see a medical doctor anywhere in the country for less than $100. No insurance required. Just bring the cash or your credit card. Probably about what this guy charges per hour for carpentry.

Seems a lot of FR folks think you need insurance to get medical care. In the NY area there are many urgent care centers where you can at least get a professional evaluation with no appointment. I’ll bet most cancers that’ll kill you in a few weeks can be evaluated with one visit and no tests.

Are we really so stupid to believe you can’t get medical care unless we have insurance?

So he couldn’t afford to see a doctor... but he had money for lottery tickets?

The way the criminally stupid media has been bleating non stop about obozo care insurance the past 10 years a lot of people probably now assume it’s illegal to go to a doctor if you don’t have insurance.

The problem is not the routine physicals which like you said are cheap, the problem are the specialized tests which pin point cancer in the early stages which is just about the only way to “cure” it, get it in the early stages and those tests cost a fortune especially for someone over 50 who has to get those tests annually. A colonoscopy for example will cost you $3000, MRIs cost about $2500, blood tests which are $1000 etc etc. If you’re self employed and business is slow you are pretty much in a dilemma when it comes to that. Those costs may not seem like a lot to criminals like Nancy Pelosi who would call that kind of money “mere crumbs”, but to a lot of people it is a LOT, half a years rent and thanks to Obama and our criminal Congress, people are dying because insurance for them has become impossible to afford.

Just to be fair, this guy was probably a goner insurance or not. Cancer about killed me and I had great insurance and didn’t look nearly as sick as him.
