I believe you're referring to "Poltergeist" and no, it was not one of his scripts(unless he did it under an assumed name.)

Yeah, alot of background and character development gets lost in his book to movie deals. That's why I prefer to watch the movies then read the books the movie is based upon.

The worse "movie, then book" I ever experienced was "Dune" by Frank Herbert.
