Scientists from the University of Colorado in Boulder are sounding the alarm that the Earths magnetic poles are showing signs of reversing. Although the pole reversal, in and of itself, isnt unprecedented, the solar winds that would take out the power grid and make parts of the globe uninhabitable could cause widespread disasters.
The Earth has a fierce molten core that generates a magnetic field capable of defending our planet against devastating solar winds. This magnetic field is vital to life on Earth and has weakened by 15 percent over the last 200 years. This protective field acts as a shield against harmful solar radiation and extends thousands of miles into space and its magnetism affects everything from global communication to power grids.
Historically, Earths North and South magnetic poles have flipped every 200,000 or 300,000 years. However, the last flip was about 780,000 years ago, meaning our planet is well overdue. The latest satellite data, from the European Space Agencys Swarm trio which monitors the Earths magnetic field, suggest a pole flip may be imminent. The satellites allow researchers to study changes building at the Earths core, where the magnetic field is generated. Their observations suggest molten iron and nickel are draining the energy out of the Earths core near where the magnetic field is generated. While scientists arent sure why exactly this happens, they describe it as a restless activity that suggests the magnetic field is preparing to flip.
The signs of the Earths poles reversing are also apparent to Daniel Baker, who says this would devastate the power grid. If a switch happens, we would likely be exposed to solar winds capable of punching holes into the ozone layer.

Exactly. We have found no archaeological evidence that Neanderthal society had any problems with their power grids or cell phone networks. I mean...c'mon.
I agree. I don't recall reading anything about a slow or lengthly shift.
I’m expecting my computer to run backwards.
Don’t worry, I have special diodes that you can buy for $500 per. Taking orders now.
Neanderthals Used Red Ochre Pigment 250,000 Years Ago
"Now, a new study suggests that Neanderthals were also using it in the present-day Netherlands region of Europe as far back as 200,000-250,000 years ago, if not earlier. "
Red Ochre is iron oxide and may have a magnetic orientation.
Before she died Helen Thomas told them about it.
“Flip” is an exaggeration. It happens slowly. Lot of time to prepare.
“imminent” is a gross exaggeration. No one would care if they said “Wide Grid Failures in 252018.”
Sea floor spreading leaves the same telltale . . . magma upwelling and being cooled by the ocean takes on the magnetic polarization at the time it solidifies. Alternating stripes of different magnetic polarization document the pole flips and constituted validation of the spreading theory.Back in the 1950s you could sit in a classroom with a map of the world up front, and see plain as day that the continents looked like fitting jigsaw pieces - and yet be told when you questioned it, that that was not significant. Finally they did paleo research and found that ancient rocks from different sides of the ocean matched up. And then there was the magnetic pole reversal mapping on the sea floor . . .
Maybe those of us who have stockpiled a lot of lead can build forts to block the extra radiation.....
So, if the north becomes the south,
Will we have to call it “the war of southern aggression”?
Back around 1968, SAGA magazine had an article on what would happen when the poles flipped.
In that short interval the crust of the Earth will slide around the core, earthquakes will destroy cities, Gloom and doom. And when the magnetic poles reestablish themselves who knows where the north or south pole will be! They even had a nice illustration of skyscrapers falling over.
In another issue they told how to sabotage the old fashioned computers with perfume or cigarette smoke.
just paint the opposite side of the needle ;^)
Why You (Probably) Shouldn’t Worry About Earth’s Magnetic Poles Flipping

"But this bar magnet is no Olympic gymnast: The flipping isn't a quick turn but rather a gradual one, and can take between 1,000 and 10,000 years. "It's not a sudden flip, but a slow process, during which the field strength becomes weak, very probably the field becomes more complex and might show more than two poles for a while, and then builds up in strength and [aligns] in the opposite direction," Monika Korte, the scientific director of the Niemegk Geomagnetic Observatory at GFZ Potsdam in Germany, previously told Live Science."
