Peppa the chicken struts around in his newly-made sweater. (Washington Corrections Center for Women)
So, uhm, prisoners at Gig Harbors Washington Corrections Center for Women are spending some of their time behind bars knitting sweaters for chickens because, well, theyre cold. Its a weird and, admittedly, adorable story.
The WCCW currently has two chicken coops. The fertilizer produced is used on the prisons gardens, which grows food for local food banks. But given the chilly temperatures, the chickens are freezing. That got Human Resources Consultant Paula Andrew (aka the Chicken Lady) thinking: why not get the prisoners to knit them some sweaters.
So, Allen brought the idea up to the prison recreation specialist, Carrie Hesch. Somewhat unbelievably, WCCW says Hesch didnt skip a beat and committed to the project. Really? Not a single beat? Not even a double take asking Allen to clarify? Wait, what? Haha, I thought you said sweaters for chickens!
A couple weeks later, and the program was good to go, with prisoners embraced the idea and began knitting away. It didnt go without hitches. According to WCCW:
The vests were a little large, but perfect for one of the members of the flock, Peppa, who pranced around the habitat with her buddy Salty.

I wonder how many prison gals are knitting escape ropes?
Busy with the keywords, huh? :-)
They don’t know about heat lamps for the coups?
There is a men’s prison in Indiana, where they make quilts, including for veterans, cancer patients, etc. If inmates can spend their time doing something creative and useful, they are probably more likely to have a chance to live among humanity again in the future. JMHO
Thanks for sharing this story.
Thanks for posting this story as I’m currently living in Gig Harbor — my wife got a hoot out of it!
“Hey Salty - does this sweater make my butt look big?”
(Funny, nowadays having a big butt can either be a good thing (Kardashians) or a bad thing!)
The women prison here also runs a dog boarding/grooming program that has received high praise for providing usable training that the inmates can use once they are released.
Um, chickens have feathers and they modulate their body temperature with them.
Spoilsport!
LOL, you Texans are ahead of the game!
Maybe they could make them some toothbrushes, also!
I still remember when idiots demanded President John Kennedy clothe Caroline’s horse. Something like 35,000 people signed the petition.
Get in here!
It’s a sweet thing to do and I’m hoping encourages a kindness in the whole environment where they are. Always good to encourage goodness.
I knew you’d come through!
Even better than I could have imagined. My fave is the second to last. There’s got to be a good ‘hybrid’ name for that one.
