.357 is the size of a .38 cal. bullet no matter if it is a .38 Special, .38 Colt, or .357 Mag round.

I never did learn what it was called a .357 instead of saying it’s a .38 magnum which would make a lot more sense.

you can put a .38 round into a .357 gun, but you should not attempt the reverse.

.357 is longer, won’t fit a .38 chamber.
.38 will fit a .357, not the other way around.

Actually it works like this:

Drop a .357 into a .38 and you may very well lose a hand.

You can drop a .38 into a .357 no problem...
