Major League Baseball says the Cleveland Indians will stop using the Chief Wahoo logo on their uniforms starting in the 2019 season.
The league says the logo, which features a smiling Native American, is not appropriate for field use.
It has had discussions with the Indians in hopes that the franchise move away from the logo, which had been used in some capacity for the franchise since the 1947 season and was still prevalent on the team's baseball caps and on its uniforms.
"Major League Baseball is committed to building a culture of diversity and inclusion throughout the game, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement. Over the past year, we encouraged dialogue with the Indians organization about the clubs use of the Chief Wahoo logo. During our constructive conversations, Paul Dolan made clear that there are fans who have a longstanding attachment to the logo and its place in the history of the team.
Cleveland will still sell merchandise featuring the mascot; that is necessary if Major League Baseball and the Indians want to maintain the trademark.
"We have consistently maintained that we are cognizant and sensitive to both sides of the discussion, Cleveland Indians owner Paul Dolan said in a statement issued by MLB While we recognize many of our fans have a longstanding attachment to Chief Wahoo, Im ultimately in agreement with Commissioner Manfreds desire to remove the logo from our uniforms in 2019.

such BS. Goes along with the city they are apart of. Used to Be’s. Bye-Bye
I predict Tribe fans will be sporting Chief Wahoo gear for many years to come.
There is simply too much money in professional sports. It is not fun anymore.
My first professional football game was when my dad took me to see the Bills play the Oilers at the 'Rockpile' in Buffalo. We parked in the street, He bought a six-pack on the walk to the stadium. I had a hot dog and a soda. We might have spent $10 on the whole deal.
I go to a lot of High School games now
“I demand that the Pittsburgh Pirates change their logo!”
I demand that they change their scumbag owner first :-).
I did hear the Braves are doing away with Homer. But they have something else in the wings that sorta resembles the Phillies mascot
Good point!
When the San Diego Padres “lost” the San Diego Chicken (greatest!!!) and were bought by a Los Angeles businessman they created a new mascot they called “Blueper” (they also changed the team colors from brown & yellow to blue).
The local newspaper had a “let’s rename the mascot” conteset. The winner was:
“Down in front!”
Hilarious.
I left the MLB the second strike. A lifetime Big Red Machine fan that was passed along to me by my grandfather. My dad’s last duty station before retiring was at the Cincy Reserve station where the players reported during Vietnam. Sparky Anderson’s daughter was in my HS graduation class.
But, the whining was just too damned much. Now it seems boring. I gave up on the NFL this season when the Jags did their stupid London stunt.
College Football - Sun Devils for me and Bama for the Mrs.
Rolex and IMSA road racing
“Major League Baseball is committed to building a culture of diversity and inclusion throughout the game,”
One more sport that I won’t be following.
Biggest mistake since “10-Cent Beer Night”.
And then he was arrested on gun charges. Thug.
Try some reverse psychology - we should demand that Indians not be mascots because Indians are poor representatives for baseball, football and sports in general and Unamerican to boot.
Watch the PC police demand Indian mascots.
Liz “Grey Beaver” Warren?
Great, does this mean no more Wahoo Fish Tacos?
Ironically a jug band called Wahoo Skiffle Crazies covered the lefty pro union anthem Which Side Are You On.
Again I have no problem with the logo as a Native American (born in Lynn MA, a part of the USA) and as a person of color (white is a color).
I don’t get it why diversity and inclusion can’t include Chief Wahoo.
When I see the Chief Wahoo logo and hear John Adams playing the war drums at Jacobs Field, or in yesteryear back at old Cleveland Municipal Stadium, I know my team is in Cleveland playing the Cleveland Indians. The smiling Chief not an insult to American Indians, or Native Americans if you must, but a tribute.
Ohio was the last redoubt of the Shawnee while they were still fighting and independent. It was for good reason the Cleveland Indians took their name and their logo. But history and tradition mean nothing to the leveling maggots and worms of the left.
Chief Wahoo is not a derogation or a racial slur, but the complimentary symbol of something worth striving for. Americans of all kinds will lose another small piece of their real past when Chief Wahoo is photo-shopped away for specious political reasons.
