Manufacturing employment declined from 20 million to 11 million since China started trading with the USA. So you want the USA to have no manufacturing?

We are getting there thanks to you .

Employment has dropped but manufacturing output has steadily increased.

Maybe technology and productivity increases have something to do with it?

I guarantee you that the labor component of China's manufacturing output has dropped as well.

It was the industrial revolution that created this civilization and our living standards.

You are helping China send the USA back to a pre-industrial era.

The USA having only 11 million workers in manufacturing with a population of 330 million is not an industrial country (The USA)

Where do you people come from? I mean every product I turn over that I buy says Made in China. And that is healthy to you? That's ok? Do you not see this?

That's bs .

China is deindustrializing the USA. Look at the graphs i posted. there are thousands more and web pages too with real products as in tons of steel produced.

Here we can see China produces more than 10 times the steel in tons:

You're hung up on employment.

Do you think it would be beter if we went back to the days before computer controlled manufacturing? There would be a lot more manufacturing jobs.

The issue is that manufacturing today requires fewer people for the same amount of output.

You can cry about it, blame the boogeyman (China), or get on with accepting reality and competing in the real world.

The choice is yours.

Yeah, they probably produce more socks too.

What about airliners?

You are living in a fantasy land. The last 20 years has seen the biggest wealth transfer in human history - from the US to China. Do you think the poor and middle class have done well in the US over the last two decades?

Free and fair trade are great. That is NOT what we have with China (or most other countries). What needs to stop is fear of Chinese retaliation. They have no ability to do so. They already impose tariffs of 500% (not a typo) on most US goods - even including US brands made in China!

We could impose a 100% tariff on Chinese goods and what - they would raise theirs to 1000%? They already strangle our exports to them - any additional tariffs on their part will have no net effect. We hold all the cards here and we do not have to allow ourselves to be continually abused by China.

That is one of the few remaining items China imports from us.

But they are also working, on Chinese airliners. Right now.

It is only time...

Most of the components of cellphones, computers, and other electronic products are now manufactured in China , so assembling the device half-a-world away would create huge logistical challenges, the article points out.

China now has a far larger supply of qualified engineers than the U.S. And China’s factories are far bigger and can react faster than those in the U.S. “Made in the USA.” is no longer a viable option for most electronics products. So, many companies have closed major facilities in the United States to reopen in China, and middle-class jobs are disappearing as the nation has stopped training enough people in the mid-level skills that factories need.

BY MAKING things and selling them to foreigners, China has transformed itself—and the world economy with it. In 1990 it produced less than 3% of global manufacturing output by value; its share now is nearly a quarter. China produces about 80% of the world’s air-conditioners, 70% of its mobile phones and 60% of its shoes. The white heat of China’s ascent has forged supply chains that reach deep into South-East Asia. This “Factory Asia” now makes almost half the world’s goods.

Nonsense.

The WTO says the Chinese import tax is less than 10% on agricultural products and 5% on non-agricultural products.

You need to be careful about where you're getting your information.

Drive around the USA.

what do you see?

I see restaurants , cheap motels, gas stations. I don't see highly automated factories manufacturing advanced electronics components robots etc. I do see that in China and Japan.

Barak the socialist donkey agrees with you and he sold out the USA to china . Now the USA is a pre-industrial medieval 3rd world country of hamburger joints and restaurants. And people like you helped Barak Hussain Obama

We bave been in a trade war with China for about 25 years. Finally we have a president fighting for us instead of rolling over.

And so the answer is to run and hide behind a trade barrier?

You really think that's the right strategy to hold back a changing world?

If we really think manufacturing electronic components is so important why don't we train the engineers and build the factories to be the best at it?

Did you ever consider the possibility that companies like Apple think they get better returns on their investment by researching, developing and marketing new technologies than by stamping out widgets?

How do you account for manufacturing output being at an all time high?

We don’t have to trade with china. The USA didn’t trade with china only until Nixon opened up trade with the china in the 1970’s . The USA is very capable of being a closed free market economy . How did we survive and actually become the most affluent country in the 1970’s without all those decades not trading with china?

china is destroying the USA

The USA produces more hamburgers at mcdonalds than electronics as China makes all our electronics .
http://www.kurzweilai.net/why-china-makes-our-electronic-products-its-not-just-cheaper-labor

And you think that is healthy. Stats can say anything . China is destroying the USA. the electronics industry was invented in the USA . now china makes all our electronics. and they ship them half way around the world . So you think this is natural or healthy ? not it's destructive to the USA and unnatural. but that's not the only industry . China is destroying the others that are left like the steel industry which only produces 1/10 what China does now as I showed in the graph above.

Tariffs? I bet Trump is thinking ahead to use the proceeds for the wall in about year 3 if the Congs can’t come through.

OK, forgetting all the complex economic reasons some manufacturing functions have moved to Asia, what do you think the answer is?

A total give up and hide away from the rest of the world?

The US represents 5% of the global population and is growing more slowly than the rest of the world.

Where do you think our economic growth is going to come from over the next 30 years? Trading with our own relatively small and flat market or with the huge, more rapidly growing rest-of-the world?

Since the USA started trading with china around 30 years ago.

A house now costs $300,000 . so the American dream is dead as who can afford that with so many $8 and $10 an hour jobs around which is less than $20,000 per year?

do you realize the USA was at the top of the world 30 years ago?

And now if the USA is doing so good as you say why is the USA 20 trillion $ in federal debt (And many states and cities and consumer add to that debt)

That looks like a country in decline . While china there was nothing there 30 years ago . now cities and a middle class that dwarf the USA’s.

So barack Obama and trade with China killed the American dream for many or most people.

A house was affordable even in the 1970’s , 80’s 90’s now at $300,000 who can afford one?

Why are so many people willing to work for $8 an hour at restaurants retail etc. ? if the as you say the USA is doing so good. the USA was at the top of the world in the 1970’s and technology has increased exponentially every year since then .So don't you think we should be doing much better than the 1970’s ? Yes of course but most people are not many are struggling most can't afford a $300,000 house. To you have mistaken this for some ideological debate or theories. it's not these are real people Americans who are struggling very badly and so America is also in decline.

Anyone who lives here in the USA should be worried . I offer a solution that Trump agrees with and some on here think it should be derided or ridiculed. This is real. cities are becoming hellholes .
