Is the Era Of The Camless Valvetrain Finally Upon Us?- Technologue
MSN.com ^ | 27 January 2018

Posted on 01/27/2018 12:49:40 PM PST by zeestephen

For decades the idea of electronically controlled electromagnetic, hydraulic, or pneumatic valve actuation has been studied, developed, and ultimately abandoned by big-name engineering firms such as Lotus and Ricardo - as well as familiar automakers including BMW, Fiat, Ford, GM, and Renault. Now a spinoff of hypercar maker Koenigsegg called Freevalve appears poised to bring the concept to production.

I was speaking with my cat about this same subject just this morning.

His input about the implications were very impressive.

They have finally gotten the bottom ends to eclipse the reliability of the top ends and now all of that mechanical inefficiency is holding them back.

We had the flat tappet Roush engines in the Heritage GT1 Falcon. It totally flooded the lifter valley and also the valve train in the heads with the engine oil. Getting 9000 RPM was no problem and we did limit it at 9600. We had to drain 5 gallons of oil out of it at the end of each day while opening a valve on the valley tray so the oil in the heads would not leak past the rings overnight and hydro lock the engine in the morning.

I am really happy to see this come to production and will be a new wrinkle in IMSA in the future.

I read about this a while back and the concept blew me away. Take your daily driver switch the valve profile to a drag race mode and off to the races.

All these years, whenever I saw your name, my lips instintively mouthed “Wenkel”.

the rotary valve engine showed a lot of promise awhile back turning to to 10,000rpm

Actually, I have to read this article with all of my attention later.

I have a Challenger that has about 350 HP after some modifications.

Would like to pass 400, which isn’t easy with a V6 challenger.

Modifying the exhaust made it much faster than the other v6 challengers I test drove.

And much louder :)

But now with turbo you got 4 cylinder cars that take off like rockets.

Looks promising. It will be interesting to see how this plays out in production vehicles. The German inventors/developers will need to be careful about the Chinese stealing their technology. The Chinese specialize in theft of intellectual property — helped By their government and their corrupt statist legal system.

Wow, have I got a deal for China: If you want to sell these camless cars in America you have to build them here and give us all the data, tooling and tech.

Doesn’t Mazda Skyactiv switch from Otto cycle to Atkinson cycle?

You must live in Boulder.

Other than being dirty, two-stokes with reed valves are pretty simple and impressive.

“Doesn’t Mazda Skyactiv switch from Otto cycle to Atkinson cycle?”

Yes, after they re-calibrated the Frazzinator dwell.

I did those in Club Racing. Then one day Tommy Riggins asked me to come by the shop. That was the start of the Machavern Mustang that we took to the GTS championship in 2003. Then when they outlawed that one, we did the first Stevenson Corvette.
