Maybe people could share what they have cooked over a fire. BBQ included. Other than the typical I have done pizza on the grill, crust first. Doesn’t take more than a coupe of minutes and it is nice and crunchy, if you like it that way. We have a nice firepit and I keep thinking I should get a small dutch oven. We’ve done some foil packet meals, works great with fish or chicken.

i’m a bit prepper-crazed, both because i want to learn how to survive should our world change radically, but i also enjoy living a simple self-sufficient lifestyle.

All that was a preamble so i don’t sound totally nuts talking about your topic of cooking over fire, lol!

The one thing I wanted when we escaped mexifornia was a pizza oven. Both because I wanted to make VPN pizzas, but also because i want to learn how to use just wood to Cook most anything. Right next to the pizza oven is a fire pit. We use those coals to get the pizza oven fire started. Plus I can put a grill over it and cook on it. I’m very excited about this!

I haven’t use the fire pit much. But my goal is to learn how to cook biscuits, stews, cakes, just about anything – in a Dutch oven. I’ve seen on TV how people use charcoal briquettes put on the bottom and on the lid of the Dutch oven, and a certain number of briquettes relates to a certain temperature. I don’t want to get stuck needing briquettes- I want to figure out how to do that just using wood from my forest.

But in the pizza oven I have cooked pizza is at 900°. Focaccia at about 500. One roast at about 400. Various vegetables also. And loaves of rye and wheat bread had about 350. If the temperature drops, I could be different things.

I look forward to learning how to handle that fire pit from everyone else here!

Get a Lodge camp Dutch oven, STAT!

I think mine is 6qt, but without rummaging around in the basement, it might be 8. Have the nylon carrier and the lid lifter tool as well.

I have very little over fire cooking experience. Would like to have more. We have cooked sausages for dinner and s’mores for dessert. And my first husband built a pizza oven once in our yard. That was absolutely awesome and I dream of another one one day.
