"My name is John Anglin. I escape from Alcatraz in June 1962 with my brother Clarence and Frank Morris. I'm 83 years old and in bad shape. I have cancer. Yes we all made it that night but barely!"
The FBI says this is the most recent piece of evidence that forced the agency to reopen the iconic cold case. The letter was sent to the San Francisco Police Department's Richmond station in 2013.
The writer makes a deal "If you announce on TV that I will be promised to first go to jail for no more than a year and get medical attention, I will write back to let you know exactly where I am. This is no joke
"

Fake news, but fun.
Could be a guy who just figured out how to get free medical care and a lot of fame to go!...................
I always thought the current washed them out to sea.
Nope , these guys would be back at their work, crime ,10 minutes after landing ,not hiding
Escape From Alcatraz is one of those movies I always have to stop what I’m doing and watch when I see it on.
Dittos - that applies to all the Clint Eastwood movies in my case. I don't see them enough to tire of them for some reason.
Can a letter from D B Cooper be far behind?
How does he know he has cancer if he has had no medical attention?
“Letters From The Grave” is a very good Streets Of San Francisco episode about an Alcatraz escapee and letters from him.
Of course, it’s a deception.
Can a letter from D B Cooper be far behind?
Maybe he still is in good health, enjoying the fruits of his labor and investments?
But when he goes on 0care...
How does he know he has cancer if he has had no medical attention?
He googled his symptoms!
Didn’t happen. “It’s because you’re stupid”.
It’s more exciting when an escapee decides to break back INTO Alcatraz.... especially if there are guns and chemical weapons involved!

IMHO it depends on whether they caught the tide right. The actual distance, disregarding the tide, is a bit over a mile, one a good swimmer can cover in a bit under an hour. If they caught the tide toward the end of the time it was flowing in, then they could have gone in with it for a ways, then back out, and managed to make land fall before they were swept out to sea.
John Anglin was a lifelong criminal, his first conviction was at age 13. It is all he knew. Maybe he got salvation in Alcatraz but the odds are he would have gone right back to his criminal behavior once out of prison. I know too many just like him and they almost never change.

This is interesting as this story claims they were taken to Seattle as well.
If hundreds of people can make it every year without a raft, then the inmates very well could have.
If they changed their names, they would likely not have been identified back in those days. Could also be one killed the other two and he was smart enough to keep his mouth shut. Lots of scenarios how they likely made it but were never heard from again.
