When I was in the Navy and deployed in Japan, we had televisions in the berthing spaces but no current programming. We watched a lot of movies on VHS.
Don't worry about your SIL -- two things American servicemen know how to do: 1. embrace the suck and make the worst out of bad situations, and 2. make their own entertainment.
