Dr. Epps worked for Ford Motor Company where she received both a provisional patent and a U.S. patent for her research.

A provisional is a placeholder to set priority. Either file for the patent in a limited period of time after that, or you lose your priority. So she's probably double counting to look more impressive.

Here is what I was looking for. One patent:
