Yes, Britain and France should be linked by a road bridge, but is it possible? [srsly?]

Britain’s foreign secretary Boris Johnson says it’s time Britain and France were linked by a bridge, calling it “ridiculous” that the two European powers were “only linked by a single rail line”. But is it even possible? And which side of the road would they drive on?

The often loose-tongued and bungling Johnson made the eyebrow raising suggestion at Thursday’s Franco-British summit, held at a British army base.

Johnson, who along with Theresa May had thrashed out a new summit with French president Emmanuel Macron, championed the idea of a bridge over the English Channel. […]

… [T]he idea of a bridge across the Channel is nothing new. In 1981, transport officials actually submitted plans to build a €3-billion three-lane motorway over the water. At the time, engineering group LinktoEurope suggested motorists would pay a £5.60 toll charge and lorries £8 to cross, which would bring in a revenue of £220 million a year (back in 1981).

However, the proposal was turned down after it was deemed “impractical”, partly because of the fact that the huge pylons on which the bridge would have to be built have the potential to make navigation of the busiest shipping lane in the world difficult for vessels. There are also the weather and security factors that mean building a bridge has never been a priority. …

Britain is regretting the rail link, these days. The last thing they want is a bridge.

The “Chunnel” was probably the best engineering compromise that could be made at this time, in that it does not interfere with surface ship traffic, requires no deep-set pylons, is resistant to most weather conditions, and the access is more easily controlled at both ends.

If anything, additional similar “Chunnels” may continue to be the best options for transport of large numbers of both people and merchandise between France (or other points in Europe) and England, as ships require considerable infrastructure for both loading and unloading cargo, for a comparatively short journey.

Hitler in 1939 would have helped build the bridge /s

The Brits really need to come into the 21st century and start driving on the right side of the road. It would make things so much easier. I’m surprised the EU never mandated it.

How is right-side driving “21st century”?

France runs their trains on the left side, just like the UK, BTW. Union Pacific Railroad still runs trains on the former Chicago & Northwestern Railway on the left as well, rather than change it.

Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Indonesia and India all drive on the left, as do several countries in southeastern Africa.

If the EU ever thinks to mandate anything, I’m automatically against it.

Boris Johnson -- one of the smartest UK politicians, just not in the political sense -- and Theresa May demonstrate to the world, one more time, that they aren't interested in Brexit and want it to go away. And, there's nothing that balances a budget faster than an open-ended hugely visible national project, hell, international project. Thanks Olog-hai.
