Was the deceased a Freeper? Trying to figure out why it was posted. Maybe just another display of bad judgement and bad taste?

Its not for everyone...

But if your interested in the statistics, this was published in 2016:

The most up to date skydiving statistics come from 2014, when the USPA recorded 24 fatal skydiving accidents. There were 3.2 million jumps in total that year, making for a total of 0.0075 fatalities per 1,000 jumps.

Tandem skydiving has an even better safety record, with 0.003 student fatalities per 1,000 tandem jumps over the past ten years.

That's 3 in a million. Disclosure: I have 'survived' over 7000 skydives over about the last 37 years. I trained in the military early on, but almost all of those were for sport or teaching. I went on to be an aviator and while I continued in the sport, jumping out of the plane is frowned upon in the general pilot community.

Two in the water.

So it was a double fault?

I know the family quite well, and respected citizens in the San Jose area. They are obviously quite devastated, and I feel for them. Last name is pronounced like “knee”. The missing story is what caused the instructor to steer into the icy lake, rather than land.
