Keith Jackson, who was widely regarded as the voice of college football by several generations, died late Friday night, his family said. He was 89.
Jackson, who retired in 2006, spent some 50 years calling the action in a folksy, down-to-earth manner that made him one of the most popular play-by-play personalities in the business.
"For generations of fans, Keith Jackson was college football," said Bob Iger, Chairman and CEO of The Walt Disney Company. "When you heard his voice, you knew it was a big game. Keith was a true gentleman and memorable presence. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, Turi Ann, and his family."

Kieth Jackson graduated from Washington State University; and was loyal to his school to the end.
Hearing him announce the starting lineups was always fun and information. I always remember him having introduced a player with his classic inflection “from Alabama...” the way he drew out the syllables was exciting and awesome.
Into to the 100th rivalry game between Michigan and Ohio State.

Baltimore’s Chuck Thompson is high on my list if announcers; both of the Birds and the Colts.
I remembered when he retired. I thought it was just a few years ago. Here it’s 12 years ago already? Time flies. R.I.P. Keith Jackson.
Greatest college football announcer, RIP, Keith!

Now there is a word.
Was it Keith Jackson who announced the murder of the Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics in 1972?
Chris Economaki.
Loved him in the middle of the wreckage of the demolition derbies and figure 8’s during Wide World of Sports. Big antenna off his headphones. As a kid I thought that was the coolest job in the world.
Think that was Jim McKay
Indeed it was.
It's third down and a country mile to go.
There's a woman college football announcer on CBS (can't recall her name) that makes me turn off the tv!
Sure had some skinny, spindly legged boys and girls back in those days.
IIRC, he was the announcer on the first season of NFL Monday Night Football...or maybe my flu has me hallucinating.
Whoa Nellie!!!
Yep, I just remembered that. He quoted AE Housman’s “To an Athlete Dying Young.” Very touching.
