I know this is off the subject but I thought it interesting enough to print. (and I live with 2 German shepherds) Years ago I rented a small farm where I kept 3 quarter horses, I acquired 3 cats at the same time, two there and one came later. The one that came later would go off into the fields to hunt and I often wondered how he knew how to get back home, he use to go far in his hunts. I watched him one day and he marked his path, every so often I would see him peeing on a area in the field, he did this the whole way across the field and I feel positive that is how he managed to wonder so far and then be able to return to where he started.
Interesting. I agree that was his method.
