In a two-hour ABC special on Harding's life, LaVona "Sandy" Golden contradicts her daughter's claims that she beat her children almost daily and once threw a knife at Harding.
In her first interview since the release of the Tonya Harding biopic I, Tonya, the real figure skating champion's mother LaVona "Sandy" Golden disputes her daughter's and the film's depiction that she was violent and abusive with her children.
During the ABC News two-hour special Truth and Lies: The Tonya Harding Story, which aired Thursday night, Harding claims that Golden beat her at least six times a week and once threw a steak knife at her during a rough upbringing that preceded and took place during Harding's time as a competitor in the 1991 World Figure Skating Championships and 1992 and 1994 Olympics.
"I dont think that there was more than one day a week, sometimes, that I didnt get beaten," the former figure skater told Good Morning America news anchor Amy Robach.
"I didnt abuse any of my children, Golden responded. Spanked? Yes, [I] spanked. Absolutely, positively you got to show them right from wrong." Golden added that she once spanked her daughter with a hairbrush, but never threw a knife at her. Why would I throw a steak knife at anybody? she said. Added Golden, [Harding has] lied so much she doesnt know what isnt a lie anymore.

I am thinking that maybe it didn't "take".
We (General ‘we’. Nothing personal)
are digging deeper and deeper into a 25 y/o
‘story’ that almost nobody cares about!
All of a sudden, this jurrasic old fable of fightin’ females has been rehashed. Tonya is being interviewed as though she’s done something grand and perversely courageous. What? is a book about this coming out? Oy!
I can’t believe that anyone watched this
Movie..................Probably a Disney creation...............needed the publicity..........
It’s fit and fodder for Lifetime................
This might all supremely miss the point. One might claim to “teach right from wrong” where one’s idea of right is another kind of wrong, e.g. based on selfishness and mere appearance.
Without the positive agape love of Christ, evil cannot be rebuked from a life.
It was wrong also for Tonya to air dirty laundry but it could be understandable. The public might be the closest thing to God she knows.
Let’s exercise two sided charity now while whatever facts actually come out that do. It’s not uncommon for wicked parents to raise wicked children.
This particular story is from a past era, but child abuse goes on, even today.
And though there have no doubt been books on this particular topic, the entertainment connection de jour is a motion picture. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5580036/
I have my doubts about her mom "spanking" the kid. Spanking is meant to instruct. Beating a kid is not spanking, and does not instruct. No surprise it didn't "take".
I admire Tonya for ability to survive. She does what has to be done to survive, no self pity. She is a tough cookie, and not strung out on drugs, booze, or government welfare.
Oh it could have taken all too well.
Could we say “spoiling the rod” does nobody good.
Such things bring overreactions which play into overweening government nannydom.
The big problem is that people who should know the New Testament well seem satisfied to live in the Old.
A comedy?..........
If even just half the story about the mother is true, she’s a witch. Not exactly a mother of the year award winner.
A comedy?”

Kind of a mix of black comedy and a “mockumentry”, I enjoyed it.
Remember this when it was going down and know for a fact she slapped Tonya.
“She is a tough cookie, and not strung out on drugs, booze, or government welfare”

Yup, she’s been doing roofing for a living, even though she’s married (happily this time) and they have a son.
Oh no, I remember this wacko. Calling Tonya “Twinkles!” “Come here Twinkles! Where are you Twinkles? Bashing in another knee Twinkles?”
My mother would probably say the same thing. In her view, she did nothing wrong.
By today’s standards both she and my stepfather would be locked up and we’d all be in foster care.
I didn’t watch it. Figured it’s be more of her lies.
[Harding has] lied so much she doesnt know what isnt a lie anymore. BTDT. It’s best to cut compulsive liars out of your life.
