Congressional committee also plans to hold a hearing about security-camera risks to small businesses

--

The U.S. Army said it removed surveillance cameras made by a Chinese state-backed manufacturer from a domestic military base, while a congressional committee plans to hold a hearing this month into whether small businesses face cybersecurity risks from using the equipment.

Fort Leonard Wood, an Army base in Missouri’s Ozarks, replaced five cameras on the base branded and made by Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology Co. , said Col. Christopher Beck, the base’s chief of staff. He said officials at the base acted after reading media reports about the company.

A Wall Street Journal article in November highlighted the prevalence in the U.S. of devices made by Hikvision, the world’s largest maker of surveillance cameras, which is 42% owned by the Chinese government. The Journal reported that some security-system vendors in the U.S. refuse to carry Hikvision cameras or place restrictions on their purchase, concerned they could be used by Beijing to spy on Americans.

All that stuff is made in China

Hikvision makes a ton of other brands as well.

This is all nanny scare tactic BS

No evidence as of yet that Beijing or anyone is spying on anybody through Hikvision or other China made gear

Hikvision is 42% OWNED BY THE CHINESE GOVERNMENT.

I hope they did not actually “rip” them out, because that can damage surrounding structures/areas, and that would waste additional taxpayer dollars.

Electronics, human food, baby food, pet food, drywall, cheap plastic crap at Walmart, the Chinese cheapen and adulterate EVERYTHING. There is NOTHING we need from Red China that we cannot produce ourselves.

For security and health reasons alone the western world should be moving away from Chinese imports.

This is a little surprising.

A few years ago, I was researching various microscopes to buy. I was told not to even bother inquiring about a Chinese microscope; I would not be authorized to purchase it.

I ended up selecting a Zeiss microscope. It was beautiful. Cells appeared like tiny pillows under the microscope (usually, cells look flat).

This is actually pretty funny if it wasn’t so sad and predictable.

Our military purchased and installed cameras that can spy on them that send pics to china or where ever. I wonder how may other cameras are doing spy work for china in the states? Cheaper than spies and more effective.

Someone in china is laughing his ass off on how stupid we are.

Now figure out if if obozo used a chinese, a russian or a muzzie contractorto build the new embassy in England.

I agree, as it relates to home security systems, but where our national security is concerned, I think surveillance/security equipment should be manufactured in the United States and that production should monitored by representatives of the agency(ies) which will be using the devices. I don’t think we should take any chances with such equipment.

Brilliant. Just brilliant. I still can’t decide if this country has been run for the last 8 years by traitors or idiots. Oh yeah! That’s right! They’re both!

Go through Sears, Wal-Mart, and the dozen-odd big name-brand stores in America. You can’t find underwear made in the US. I stood in three stores last summer looking for replacement underwear. Last time I ever saw US-made underwear was in Macys.

If the security cameras are not connected to the internet and are not wireless, then there is no security risk.

If the cameras are connected to the internet, then they can possibly be hacked into, and it doesn't matter where the cameras were made.

Just repeating:

The Chinese communist government OWNS 42% of the largest video-camera maker in the entire world.

That is the company we’re talking about. 42% owned by the Chinese communist government.

I’m glad the Army pulled the cameras, but I am not at all pleased, they had them there, to begin with.
