/src on/Asking the important questions./src off/ Just like all the Imperial Officers in Star Wars, until the most recent one, had British accents. Of course the opposite happens in that British accents are used to emphasize high class or book smarts.

Why Do Cartoon Villains Speak in Foreign Accents?

Because they're drawn that way. Like Jessica Rabbit.

Linguists have also found that not only do people make judgements (sic)about their peers’ intelligence and education levels based on language characteristics (with those who speak standard dialects usually being viewed as smarter and better-looking), but also that those judgments often shape how a person or group of people is treated.

And the same judgments occur in other countries when foreigners speak those countries' languages with a "non-standard" (i.e. "foreign") dialect/accent. It's human nature.

I seems everyone on earth is allowed to be human except Americans who speak standard English.

This writer doesn't know about Japanese anime, where the Osaka-ben (Kansai region) dialect is used show characters that are "different" than the regular characters.

You know how far psychology is from real science?
Triple that, and you’re approaching the acute idiocy of sociologists.
And those that fail sociology write for the press.

This happens because the elite liberal and racist owners of cartoon studios hire evil liberal and racist liberals to do the voice overs for their toons.

Some really major villains in recent movies have had very american accents:

Thanos (Avengers); and many of the heroes have “foreign accents”

Cobra Commander (GI Joe)

Megatron (Transformers)

Ego (Guardians of the Galaxy 2)

The villain from Zootopia (identity is a spoiler; leaving it out since it’s a good movie that some may not yet have seen)

Col. Quaritch (Avatar)

Carter Burke (Aliens)

As to the original OP contention, at least some of the foreign villainous characters are justified: The “Evil Brit” in Pirates of the Caribbean 3 is a high-ranking officer in the British East India Company. Plenty of evil Europeans are leftovers from the Cold War, where they were the go-to villain of movie series that had huge impacts on the culture such as the James Bond films (and even several of his villains were American).

They speak in foreign accents because the writers don’t have to spend time explaining to the audience the setup. Similar to why a minister is always presented as a Catholic wearing a collar — everyone immediately recognizes him for what he is. It would take time to establish that with a Protestant minister who dresses like everyone else.

Gidney has a point.

From this moment on - all villains and bad guys will now speak with an ebonics accent.

Or a Mexican accent.

That will surely solve all problems and issues, right?

There is actually a writer’s manual on writing characters. It say Americans are suspicious of educated people. To make a good villian give him a high class, educated British accent. I think it’s by Writer’s Digest and the title is something like “Creating memorable characters.”

It’s not really hard to understand, especially with respect to Scar: Jeremy Irons.

Jeremy Irons probably wasn’t hired because of his great voice acting and Bob Saget impersonation but because he sounded just like himself and I would be that in casting meetings when they were pondering what kind of voice Scar should have someone said “He should sound like Jeremy Irons.”, the obvious reply being “Is Jeremy Irons actually available?”

My theory is that a lot of villains, when they’re thinking about voice actors, get their voices this way. Either someone thinks of actor X and actor X is available or they find someone who can sound like Actor X, accent included.

This is because villains often need the voice to quickly establish their gravitas whereas heros often need to establish their’s through the story ... so they don’t need the voice (and maybe need not to have the voice) unless they’re not long for this world (as Simba’s dad was).

And when you need the voice you don’t mess with the voice!

Consider this Darkseid: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KykmB5fJxmI

The Dispicable Me series must be very confusing. The central character flip flops from baddy to good guy back to villain until he becomes good again, and he has a very thick foreign accent!

This is just what I'd expect from a 2017 graduate from Wesleyan University.

Where are the foreign accents in this lot, Ms. Fattal?

Here is the Disney lot...However, if you look at Pixar, you get these 'foreigners':

I am amazed such common knowledge is so uncommon these days...

Oh yes, the Marxist brainwashing programming is so complete these days.
