You dont have to use spaces to write the HTML code longhand (i.e. without executing) if you use the code for the less-than and greater-than signs, which are < and > respectively.
Write the code as <img src=http://i64.tinypic.com/1ru1vq.gif width=200> to get <img src=http://i64.tinypic.com/1ru1vq.gif width=200> to display in the message.
I use the quotation marks in the code because the option of omitting them is deprecated in some browsers, or so I discovered.

Yeah, I was wondering if my method might not work on other browsers.
Using those codes, < and > would eliminate the necessity of leaving a space so that the code isn't executable and then having to instruct someone to eliminate it.
test using a copy and paste of your non-executable code...

How did you prevent the < and > codes in your first paragraph from showing as < and > ?
I tried to mimic it in my 2nd paragraph but they showed up as < and > whereas yours didn't.
The only difference I can see is the font.
