Goodell defends NFL’s drop in TV ratings

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell defended the league’s declining TV ratings Sunday, pointing out that 20 of the 30 highest-rated shows in 2017 were NFL games.

Nielsen television ratings data backs up Goodell’s argument. NBC’s Sunday Night Football and ESPN’s Monday Night Football were the most-watched shows every week in each key male demographic.

However, Nielsen’s numbers also show that NFL television ratings fell 9.7 percent during the 2017 regular season. In 2016, the ratings fell 8 percent. The average game in 2017 had 1.6 million fewer viewers than in 2016.

“We always want ratings to go up, but we’re 37 of the top 50 shows, which is higher than ever,” Goodell told reporters in Jacksonville before the Jaguars’ wild-card playoff game against the Buffalo Bills.

“We’re likely to be the No. 1 show on Fox — excuse me on all of television, the Fox Sunday afternoon game. Sunday night, prime time is for the seventh year in a row the No. 1 show. Thursday night football is No. 2. “I think dominance of the NFL in television is still very clear.”

Goodell also said the league has made other efforts to expand its viewing audience. The NFL and Verizon partnered to stream in-market and national games. The league also teamed with Amazon to stream 10 Thursday night games this season.

Goodell putting a positive spin on ratings that fell 9.7% this year and 8% in 2016. The main difference is that NFL ratings matter a lot more since it's live. Many shows gain large audiences on DVR and streaming over the course of a week. The NFL doesn't have that luxury.

The top 50 shows on broadcast TV must be rubbish then.

A bit like claiming Hillary Clinton is the best looking woman in Chappaqua NY.

The players have shown disrespect to many who pay lots of money to watch them. The customers of the NFL are not going to forget, especially if their teams are losing games. People will turn to Golf or Fishing or Hunting. Why should football be important in our lives?

He’s a LIBERAL. Hired Joe Lockhart the Clinton mouthpiece, who has issued personal attacks on Trump as official NFL statements. NFL Now stands for Nefarious Friggin Liberals.

So Godell will pick up the tab when advertisers demand refunds for the lack of capacity anticipated?

It is a numbers game. When those numbers turn from % to $, Godell may feel some heat under the collar.

If goodell were the spokesperson of the titanic as it was taking on water, he would declare, "See, we're doing just fine, the boat remains afloat."

Hmmm, it appears that the “Rule of the Lowest Common Denominator” applies to our elite. (Emphasis on common and low)

Examples: Clintons (both), Dorkbama, Holder and the following idiotess, Schumer, Pelosi, Boxer, that Texas female cretin, et al.

And to think that CNN actually pushes out that Trump inept.
Can one imagine any of the examples named above ever holding a real job? (Or even getting hired for one, save for quotas?)

People are watching less and less prime time TV these days. My 12 year old son watches homemade videos on YouTube. When I was his age, I was glued to the TV.

I guess Goodell is okay with declining ratings. Hope the owners, the players, and the advertisers share his view.

Oops, forgot the pond scum Goodell in my list. Oh well, to list all of the left half of the Bell curve would pretty much cover the democratic party, journalists, and of course....sports networks.

"He has to justify his multi-million dollar raise."

I could find someone who could do a better job than Goodell for $250,000 a year or less.
