Josephine Liang, 25, is part of a growing community of "freegans," people who eat recently discarded food to reduce waste.
Liang used to shop regularly at the supermarket, then found a cheaper alternative by rummaging through bins, a decision that she says has lowered her weekly food bill to just £5 a week. Liang will wait until shops and cafes close, and then go through their bins to see what she can find. She is saving the money to go travelling.

Good that she’s in the UK.
When she contracts (pick a nasty disease, like hepatitis) she can drain the pockets of productive people to pay for her healthcare so that she can return to her ‘hobby’.
Too bad the dumpsters don’t take coupons. And this would have killed S&H Green or blue chip stamps earlier than they were finished.

Oh My.....
50 some years ago I found an unwrapped package of chocolate covered graham crackers in a dumpster. Didn’t notice the maggots crawling through those little holes until I had eaten several.
I have never eaten another graham cracker since.
The cost of her hepatitis treatments will more than offset what she is saving.
She could also just get a job.
Reminds me of the reporter who was making a story on the plight of the homeless, so he spent a night on the street with the best camping equipment available and took over one of the steam grates the homeless used to keep warm.
But of Course!
We wouldn’t want a noble Social Justice Warrior to SUFFER now would we? LOL!
Why doesn’t this freegan eat human and animal waste too ? I mean has to be some nutrients that aren’t absorbed.
Do you know what’s worse than finding a worm in an apple you’re eating....?
“Regulations and fear of lawsuits...”
My Conservative, but big-hearted daughter was just lamenting on all of the waste from restaurants, etc. (She works at them).
I told her what you just said - they used to do it, but not anymore. Even if it was fresh out of the oven, all it would take is one guy putting it away in his grocery cart of his life’s belongings and then eat it three days later and get sick. And then sue.
algore would be proud.
I remember reading of a man and his grown daughter living out of dumpsters back about forty years ago. Their brag was they could live on an income of less than $1000 a year.
How much is that? - Google says $6.78.
Are there Walmarts in the U.K.? A 12-pack of Ramen noodles is $1.94 plus 5% sales tax at my local WM. They also sell cans of tomato soup for 50 cents a can. $3.50 + 5% plus $1.94 + 5%. - That’s two “soups” per day with some Ramen left-over. (do the bums ever get tired of soup? - Seinfeld)
And you don’t have to dumpster-dive. You DO, however, have to go into Wal*Mart......
Half a worm?
I have heard of freegans before...long time ago about a group in Australia. I guess I would be too worried about germs from the dumpster, but I actually think it’s a neat idea as I don’t like unnecessary waste.
George Orwell already did this stunt long ago and wrote it up.
The food came from the Las Vegas buffets. It gets microwaved somewhere between the strip and the trough.
Well,it’s a good thing she has that outstanding “NHS” to care for her when she ingests some flesh eating microbe.
