In one of the more enlightened updates to Roseanne, Darlenes son Mark (Ames McNamara) likes to dress up in girls clothing. But it would be wrong to assume the 9-year-old character is transitioning or is gay. We asked executive producer Sara Gilbert (Darlene) to explain why she created the role of Mark and what fans can expect of his story arc when the reunion begins its nine-episode run March 27 on ABC.
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Does Mark see himself as a girl?
SARA GILBERT: He doesnt. Thats something that got out in the press thats not true. Hes not a transgender character. Hes a little boy. Hes based on a few kids in my life that are boys who dress in more traditionally feminine clothing. Hes too young to be gay and he doesnt identify as transgender, but he just likes wearing that kind of clothing and thats where he is at this point in his life.
How much do you address his desire to wear girls clothing?
There is an episode that addresses it. He dresses that way throughout the show, but theres one episode that focuses on it more heavily. We did a lot of research because we wanted to make sure and do it properly. This character is not transgender.
What made you want to create this character?
It represents the world. This is a show thats always been able to represent the world and talk about it without being so issue-heavy. We can do it through the dynamics of the family. I know kids like that and it seemed like a great character. One kid in particular that I know is so sweet, funny, charming, and great. In a way the character thats one element of the character that he dresses that way, but hes also based

Reason to avoid black framed glasses.
Not surprised that he was molested as a child.
She used to be cute, when she was playing Darlene.
Maybe we could get M*A*S*H back on so Klinger would finally get that section 8 discharge he always wanted
Are you kidding? Today, Klinger would get a promotion.
Hawkeye would give him that sexual reassignment surgery, Stanley Friedman would put him in for a medal for bravery, Margaret would give him beauty tips, and the US taxpayers get to pay for his hormones and care for ever.
I was in love with a lesbian many years ago. Beautiful woman with black hair and pale blue eyes. We dated for a while, even made love( I was her first and only boyfriend) but we didn’t last long. Still it was an experience....
Wow! Where is he now?
He is in prison - either Oregon or California.
Good!
Yes, if you read the linked story you see that he became very good at working the system to receive lenient sentences and/or overturned rulings. He truly is evil and deserves a dirt nap.
I read the article and when I saw the date on it, I hoped justice had been served on him since then.
Just watched the show. He’s not a tranny.
We werent big fans of the original show, but for nostalgias sake we turned it on tonight. Within 5 minutes the grandson dressed as a girl showed up and we went, Nope. And turned it off.
I call BS on the OP excerpt because, yeah, YOUNG boys may try on traditional girls clothes or play with traditional girl toys but the grandson on the show wasnt a young boy. He was like 10 or 12.
They were making a statement and promoting an agenda.
I turned to the show about 10 minutes in, saw Roseanne tending to her black granddaughter (I think that’s who she was), while her sister Jackie was wearing her “pussy” hat and spewing new age mantras from her “life coach” training courses. When the grandson turned out to be a latent metrosexual, that was about all I could take, and changed to MeTV repeats.
About the only memorable line was when Roseanne, clearly aiming it at Darlene, noted that she had come to grips with having a homosexual daughter. Of course, Darlene denied it, and hilarity (or the laugh track) ensued.
Guess you can’t “reboot” an old TV show without PC’ing it up about 10 notches anymore.
